Dallas Cowboys star Trevon Diggs was able to turn in a strong performance on Sunday against the Green Bay Packers despite coming off the bench for the second time this season.
The All-Pro cornerback registered four solo tackles against the Packers, including a crucial tackle for a loss in overtime, helping the Cowboys secure a thrilling 40-40 tie in Week 4.
When asked about Diggs’ benching after the game, Dallas head coach Brian Schottenheimer revealed that the two-time Pro Bowl CB has been “banged up a little bit.” The coach also said, however, that he’s been “a little tough” on Diggs in terms of his consistency. Schottenheimer liked what he saw from Diggs, though, claiming that he “played really well” against Green Bay.
Speaking to the media on Wednesday, Diggs himself revealed that his benching was actually more of a punishment rather than an injury-related concern.
“Cowboys CB Trevon Diggs didn’t start against the Packers because of an off-the-field issue, he said in the locker room,” revealed Dallas beat reporter Nick Harris of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram.
Diggs did not go into detail regarding the said “off-the-field issue.” However, the 27-year-old owned up to the same as he expressed his reaction to Schottenheimer’s decision.
“I guess it was coach holding me accountable and I accept it. It’s cool,” Diggs said, via Todd Archer of ESPN. “But back on track this week, ready to work.”
Diggs added that he expects to start on Sunday against the New York Jets.
Diggs is one of the Cowboys’ best players on the field, and they will need him to be at his best this season if they want to remain competitive in the NFC.
However, Schottenheimer’s decision to bench the former PFWA Most Improved Player due to an issue outside of football demonstrates how the first-year head coach places a high regard on how his players behave and carry themselves off the field.
