ABC viewers were left shocked as David Muir shared an update on a car that caused chaos at an airport.

Airline passengers were stunned when a Toyota Camry was seen speeding onto a taxiway at Orange County’s John Wayne Airport on Monday, December 8. The vehicle narrowly avoided colliding with planes, with a spokesperson for the airport later revealing the driver was a security guard who had suffered a medical emergency.

Muir, 52, shared the news on ABC World News Tonight as he reported, “Now to dramatic images tonight showing a car racing past passenger planes down a busy airport taxiway. Air traffic controllers alerting pilots in Orange County, California.”

Muir then passed over to ABC correspondent Gio Benitez for more. As a video played of the car driving down the taxiway, Benitez told viewers, “Tonight, tense moments on the tarmac. A car was seen speeding past taxiing planes at Orange County’s John Wayne Airport, south of LA. Pilots sounding the alarm as the vehicle flew past them Monday afternoon.”
A recording from one pilot played as they asked, “Do you guys see that white Camry zipping by?” Benitez reported that air traffic control warned all pilots “to stay in place.” Air traffic controllers were heard saying in a recording, “Southwest 1057, hold position. There’s a high-speed chase on the taxiway.”

Benitez said sheriffs deputies chased down the vehicle and detained the driver, who was a security guard. The airport told ABC, “The individual was evaluated on scene and determined to be experiencing a possible medical emergency.”
Focus then turned elsewhere as Benitez reported, “And in Florida, after that incredible crash landing on I-95, east of Orlando, a small plane striking a car. Authorities now releasing 911 calls.”

In one call played on the news program, a woman was heard saying, “A plane hit a car as it landed on I-95.” She then shouted to someone near her, “I’m calling 911!”
Another driver who witnessed the incident told emergency responders, “I saw him coming down and I hit the break. He pulled, came right beside me and hit the small white car.”
Benitez reported in a voiceover as footage of the incident played, “The driver of the vehicle was taken to the hospital with minor injuries. Incredibly, both people on board the plane were not injured.”

Speaking live, the journalist added, “And David, back to that speeding vehicle on the tarmac, the security guard was taken to a local hospital for further evaluation. The airport says that operations were not impacted, but of course a very concerning incident.”
