The New York Mets and Kansas City Royals didn’t make a trade this offseason.

But they might have completed the next closest thing.
Veteran outfielder Starling Marte signed a one-year deal with the Royals, while MJ Melendez landed with the Mets on a split contract. The two moves effectively swapped former outfielders between organizations — and both teams may have landed exactly what they needed.
Why Melendez Fits the Mets

Melendez arrives in New York as a classic low-risk upside play.
The former top-50 prospect hasn’t yet delivered on the promise that once made him one of baseball’s most intriguing young hitters. But the Mets aren’t asking him to be a cornerstone piece.
They’re asking him to provide depth.
Because Melendez signed a split contract, the Mets can send him to the minors without exposing him to waivers. That flexibility makes him an ideal insurance policy for a roster that already has several moving parts in the outfield and DH mix.
And early in spring training, he’s already making noise.
Melendez recently blasted two home runs in a single game, showing the kind of raw power that once made him such an exciting prospect.
He’s not guaranteed a spot on the Opening Day roster, but he’s firmly in the conversation.
Why Marte Makes Sense for Kansas City

While Melendez represents upside, Marte offers something different for the Royals: experience and clubhouse leadership.
Kansas City narrowly missed the playoffs last season, finishing just one game behind the Mets with 82 wins to New York’s 83. After a relatively quiet offseason, adding a respected veteran could help stabilize a young roster.
Marte’s biggest impact may come off the field.

During his time in New York, he built a reputation as a positive presence in the clubhouse — someone teammates respected and young players could learn from.
On the field, however, expectations should be realistic.
At this stage of his career, Marte is likely best suited as a right-handed designated hitter rather than a full-time outfielder.
A Comparison That Wasn’t Supposed to Exist

It’s not every day that fans find themselves comparing MJ Melendez and Starling Marte.
But because the two effectively swapped teams, the comparisons are inevitable.
If Melendez finds success in New York, Royals fans may wonder whether the organization gave up too soon on a once-promising prospect.
If Marte has a strong season in Kansas City, Mets fans may question whether the team should have kept him instead of restructuring the roster around players like Jorge Polanco and Mark Vientos.
In reality, both moves were driven by roster construction.
The Royals decided it was time to move on from Melendez after he appeared in just 23 games last season. The Mets, meanwhile, needed flexibility after their offseason changes made Marte somewhat redundant.
A Rare Win-Win Outcome

Neither team made a blockbuster move.
But both addressed needs.
Kansas City gains a veteran voice and potential DH option. New York gets controllable depth with some untapped power potential.
It’s not often that two teams benefit from what amounts to a free-agent “swap.”
But in this case, the Mets and Royals may have quietly pulled it off.
