The Toronto Blue Jays spent the offseason determined to address the biggest flaw exposed during their 2025 World Series run: pitching depth.

After falling short of a championship, the front office aggressively reshaped the rotation. On paper, Toronto now boasts one of the most formidable starting staffs in baseball — a unit capable of matching up with any contender.
The group includes:
- Trey Yesavage
- Kevin Gausman
- Dylan Cease
- Cody Ponce
- Shane Bieber
- José Berríos
With that much talent available, the Blue Jays have an unusual problem — deciding who should start Opening Day.
While several pitchers could make a legitimate case, two names stand out above the rest: Dylan Cease and Trey Yesavage, both known for their ability to pile up strikeouts.
Trey Yesavage: The Rising Star

Few players captured attention during the 2025 postseason the way Trey Yesavage did.
The young right-hander began the season buried deep in the organization’s pitching pipeline but ended the year pitching on baseball’s biggest stage. His postseason performance quickly turned him into one of Toronto’s most intriguing arms.
Despite limited experience, Yesavage finished with one of the highest strikeout totals among postseason starters.

Only Blake Snell recorded more strikeouts, and even then the margin was slim — just two extra strikeouts despite Snell throwing nearly seven more innings.
That dominance created enormous momentum for the young pitcher heading into 2026.
If the Blue Jays choose Yesavage for Opening Day, it would mark a dramatic moment — launching his rookie season with the highest-profile start of the year.
Given the faith Toronto showed in him during the playoffs, the possibility isn’t as far-fetched as it might seem.
Dylan Cease: The Proven Strikeout Machine

While Yesavage represents upside and excitement, Dylan Cease offers reliability and elite track record.
Since becoming a full-time starter in 2021, Cease has been one of baseball’s most consistent strikeout pitchers.
During that span, he has:
- Made at least 32 starts every season
- Recorded five consecutive seasons with 214+ strikeouts
That level of consistency is rare and valuable for a team looking to begin the season with stability.
Toronto clearly believes Cease can anchor their rotation long-term. The Blue Jays demonstrated that confidence by signing him to a seven-year, $210 million contract earlier in the offseason.
For a pitcher of Cease’s stature, an Opening Day assignment would feel like the natural choice.
A Symbolic Decision

Opening Day is about more than just one game. It often sends a message about the identity of a team’s pitching staff.
Choosing Cease would signal a commitment to experience and proven dominance. Selecting Yesavage would highlight the organization’s belief in a rising star ready to take the league by storm.
Either option would give Toronto a formidable start to the season.
Setting the Tone for 2026

The Blue Jays begin their 2026 campaign at Rogers Centre, opening the year with a home series against the Oakland Athletics.
After coming painfully close to a championship last season, Toronto enters the year with clear expectations: finish the job.
And whichever pitcher gets the Opening Day call — the established ace or the breakout sensation — will carry the responsibility of setting the tone for what the Blue Jays hope will be another deep October run. ⚾
