- Adam Sandler’s Big Daddy makes reference to the Toronto Blue Jays’ last World Series appearance in 1993

- The connection has been joked about by sports fans as the team returns to the World Series, facing the Los Angeles Dodgers
Adam Sandler showing love to the Toronto Blue Jays in his 1999 classic hasn’t been forgotten by fans.
Big Daddy follows Sandler as Sonny, a lovable but directionless man who pretends to be his roommate, Kevin (Jon Stewart) when a little boy named Julian ( Dylan and Cole Sprouse) shows up on their doorstep, saying he’s his son.
The beloved film is full of heartwarming moments between Sonny and Julian and later, a revelation as Kevin realizes he is, in fact, the little boy’s father.
“6 years ago … Joe Carter. Toronto and the Phillies, you know … World Series! Mitch Williams … we flew up for the night!” Kevin says to Sonny, before turning to his fiancé, Corinne (Leslie Mann) to offer an explanation.

Blue Jays memorabilia lines the walls of the bedroom in “Big Daddy”
“There was a girl. I’m an idiot. I was so hammered – chicken wings and Molson 3.0. You know, Canadian beer’s like moonshine! I know this changes everything, but I have to do the right thing.”
In the years since the film’s release, fans have noted Easter eggs that suggest Kevin was a true Blue Jays fan. When Sonny sets Julian up in his bedroom, you can see Toronto regalia decorating the walls, from a foam blue “J” to a photo of Joe Carter and a Blue Jays head.
Sports editor Ben Axelrod joked about the connection online, sharing a photo of Julian and writing, “The Blue Jays’ last World Series appearance led to a one-night stand involving a Hooters waitress that resulted in this kid being born.”
The Toronto Blue Jays will face off against the Los Angeles Dodgers in Game 1 of the World Series on Friday, Oct. 24. It marks an emotional moment for one of the team’s stars, Vladimir Guerrero Jr. The son of Hall of Fame right fielder, Vladimir Guerrero Sr., was born in 1999, the same year Big Daddy was released.
This is the Blue Jays’ first time in the World Series since their back-to-back wins in 1992 and 1993, which made them one of just two teams in the MLB with multiple World Series appearances and no losses.
