San Francisco Giants infielder Casey Schmitt underwent surgery to remove a carpal boss, a benign bone lump, on the back of his left wrist, the team announced.

Schmitt had the surgery, performed by Dr. Steven Shin, in Los Angeles on Tuesday morning, with a projected 8- to 10-week timeline for recovery.
That timeline would put Schmitt in line to return the first week of February at the latest. Depending on his recovery, he may be limited in the first days of spring training, which begins in mid-February.
Schmitt took a fastball off his left wrist in an at-bat against the Miami Marlins on June 25 and struggled with the injury in the weeks to follow. He landed on the injured list with a bone bruise as a result.
The 26-year-old moved around the diamond – between first base and third base – in 2025 before settling in as the everyday second baseman, adjusting well to a relatively new position. He batted .237 with a .706 OPS and a career-high 12 home runs in his third season, making his case to return as the Giants’ everyday second baseman in 2026.
