The Houston Astros have spent much of the offseason fielding trade inquiries for Isaac Paredes, but as spring training progresses, a deal appears increasingly difficult to finalize.
Despite months of speculation, general manager Dana Brown has yet to move the versatile infielder. At this point, Paredes may simply begin the season on Houston’s Opening Day roster, even though the club still faces an infield logjam.
A Crowded Infield Situation

If Paredes remains with the team, manager Joe Espada will have a surplus of infield options.
Houston already has multiple players competing for everyday roles, making it impossible for everyone to receive consistent playing time. Normally, the designated hitter spot could offer extra flexibility, but Yordan Álvarez is expected to occupy most of those at-bats.
That leaves Paredes in a difficult spot — valuable enough to play regularly, but currently without a clear everyday role.
Trade Talks Cooling Off

According to reports from The Athletic, discussions involving Paredes have recently slowed.
He remains available, but the Astros’ demands have narrowed the list of potential trade partners.
Houston is reportedly seeking an established left-handed hitting outfielder in return — a relatively specific request that only a handful of teams can realistically fulfill.
That requirement is one of the biggest reasons a trade has yet to materialize.
Boston Still a Logical Partner

One team that could theoretically meet Houston’s asking price is the Boston Red Sox.
Like the Astros, Boston has its own positional surplus — particularly in the outfield. Two players who could potentially interest Houston are:
- Jarren Duran
- Wilyer Abreu
Of the two, Duran may be the more appealing target. He offers a dynamic combination of power, speed, and base-stealing ability, capable of turning singles and walks into extra bases.
Abreu, meanwhile, provides elite defense — highlighted by his two Gold Glove Awards — but his higher strikeout rate could raise concerns for Houston’s front office.
Red Sox Motivation Unclear

Even if Boston has the players Houston wants, the Red Sox may not feel the same urgency to make a deal.
They recently acquired Caleb Durbin from the Milwaukee Brewers, giving them additional depth in the infield and reducing their immediate need for Paredes.
Still, lingering uncertainty around Boston’s middle infield could keep the door open for negotiations.
Limited Alternatives

Another team occasionally mentioned as a possible partner is the Pittsburgh Pirates, but they lack the type of left-handed outfield talent the Astros are seeking in return.
Without a team capable of meeting Houston’s price, trade talks could remain stalled for the foreseeable future.
A Decision Looms

If the Astros cannot find a deal that matches their expectations, they may ultimately choose to keep Paredes — at least to start the season.
While that would create a complicated roster situation, Brown has made it clear he is unwilling to move a productive player simply to clear space.
For now, Paredes remains both a valuable asset and a difficult puzzle for Houston’s front office to solve.
