SNAP benefits are going to run out, and millions of Americans are needlessly going to go hungry because the President of the United States won’t lift a finger to help them. “The American people are already suffering, and the suffering is going to get a lot worse, not because the President of the United States has failed to make the shutdown painless,” said Vice President JD Vance on October 30th, refusing to acknowledge that it’s his own administration responsible for that suffering.
The truth is that not only has Donald Trump done NOTHING to alleviate to suffering of the American people, he is deliberately (and illegally, we might add) increasing the suffering of poor Americans by refusing to release the $5 billion in emergency funding already appropriated for SNAP benefits.

“This is illegal what they’re doing. We have appropriated money. It’s over $5 billion into a contingency fund that until last week on the USDA website itself, it said that this money could be used during a government shutdown. And we know they also have the authority to also move other money around and pay November SNAP benefits!” says Democratic Rep. Angie Craig.
She went on to say, “the bottom line is the administration is choosing not to pay 440,000 Minnesotans their SNAP benefits in November. They’re choosing not to pay 16 million children who have access to SNAP benefits. They are choosing to do this. It’s illegal, it’s immoral, and it’s probably one of the most cruel things we’ve seen out of this administration so far.”
One in eight Americans use the program to feed themselves and their families. The Trump team argues that “contingency funds are not legally available to cover regular benefits,” but that’s simply not true.
