Legendary college football coach Nick Saban is believed to lean left politically. However, that doesn’t stop him from praising President Trump.
The national title-winning head coach spoke about President Trump, 79, during Friday’s Pat McAfee Show. Saban and McAfee, who work together on ESPN’s “College GameDay,” were discussing the President of the United States’ decision to attend a Week 10 NFL regular season game this weekend. President Trump, who took office in January, is expected to attend the Commanders vs. Lions game at Northwest Stadium.
“Sources are telling me that President Donald Trump will be in attendance for this Washington Commanders game in the afternoon against the Detroit Lions,” McAfee said on Friday’s The Pat McAfee Show. “He will actually be there to celebrate the Veteran’s Celebration that is taking place at halftime. He’ll be sitting in owner Josh Harris‘ box and he’ll be excited to celebrate the hell out of the greatest sport on earth, American football.”
Saban responded, praising President Trump’s sports fandom.
“President Trump is a great sports fan,” Saban said. “He loves sports. He loves football, he loves all kinds of sports. And if you ever talk to him, that’s all he wants to talk about.”
Saban, who retired after the 2023 season, is believed to be a Democrat.
“Saban has indicated over the years that he does care about professional politics and is at least a little bit—emphasis on ‘a little bit’—of a Democrat. The former coach, a native West Virginian, is a longtime friend of retiring Democratic Sen. Joe Manchin and endorsed him in his 2018 reelection. In 2022 Saban signed a letter urging Manchin to help pass voting rights protections, though Saban later clarified by way of a media leak that he did not support going around the filibuster,” college football reporter Alex Kirshner wrote for Slate earlier this year.
“Saban said last year that college football players should be unionized and explained to an interviewer, ‘General Motors and the automotive industries had unions for a long time and they survived fairly well.’ Saban is a registered voter in Alabama, but the secretary of state’s office doesn’t list a party affiliation. Saban’s agent, Jimmy Sexton, did not reply to emailed questions about whether Saban would have any interest in running or under which party affiliation.”

Saban’s political leanings won’t stop him from praising President Trump
There are many in today’s United States that will refuse to praise President Trump for anything due to their political standing.
Saban is not one of those people.
While the legendary college football head coach is believed to lean left on many issues, he’s not going to apologize for deciding to praise President Trump for his sports fandom, or anything else he feels worthy of praising.
That’s how things should be, right?
