WATERBURY, Conn. (TNND) — Rep. Jasmine Crockett, D-Texas, on Sunday appeared to defend migrants by claiming the United States needs them to harvest cotton.
Her comment came during a guest appearance at the 125th anniversary of Grace Baptist Church in Connecticut. In an appeal to those opposed to President Donald Trump’s immigration policies, Rep. Crockett suggested migrants fulfill crucial jobs that Americans no longer desire.

“So I had to go around the country and educate people about what immigrants do for this country, or the fact that we are a country of immigrants,” she said. “The fact is ain’t none of y’all trying to go and farm right now.”
“OK, so I’m lying?” the representative asked. “You’re not, you’re not. We’re done picking cotton. We are. You can’t pay us enough to find a plantation.”
The remark sparked shocked reactions across social media.

“Jasmine Crockett said she wants illegal immigrants to pick her cotton and NO ONE from the left is gonna check her?” women’s sports activist Riley Gaines asked. “Wild times we’re living in.”
“I’m really trying to grasp her logic,” Sen. Mike Lee, R-Utah, added. “And yet .”
President Donald Trump acknowledged Rep. Crockett during remarks at the National Republican Congressional Committee dinner Tuesday.

“The Democrats have taken a lot of beatings, they’ve lost their confidence,” he said. “They’ve gone crazy. How about this new one they have, their new star Crockett? Are they serious about that?”
“If that’s their new star they’re in serious trouble,” he added.
Rep. Crockett last month also faced backlash for referring to Texas Gov. Greg Abbott, who uses a wheelchair, as “Governor Hot Wheels.” She defended that comment, claiming it referred to his use of busses to transport illegal migrants out of his state.
