Fans of the Today show know that Jenna Bush Hager debuted a new haircut back in June. And decades earlier, the talk-show host, 43, debuted a radical hair transformation that she still recalls to this day.
In the latest episode of Jenna & Friends, the topic came up during Bush Hager’s chat with guest Claire Danes, who once starred in the short-lived TV show My So-Called Life.
Being a ’90s kid, the Today host revealed during the Wednesday, Nov. 12 taping just how much influence Danes’ throwback character had on Bush Hager back in the day.
“I have had kind of a girl crush on you for a long time, including in the sixth grade when I got food coloring and I dyed my hair,” she told Danes, confirming that it was all in an effort to look like the actress’ character Angela from My So-Called Life.
Bush Hager then showed the Homeland star a side-by-side image of herself as a kid and Danes in the ’90s series, both sporting reddish-brown hair.
“Doesn’t that little person want to be the other little person?” says Bush Hager.
Danes proceeded to share an interesting behind-the-scenes anecdote about young Angela’s story arc in the show.
“Originally, it was scripted that Angela was supposed to peroxide her hair,” the Emmy-winner tells Bush Hager and her guest co-host Leslie Bibb. “And the hairdresser was like, ‘I’m not going to destroy this 13-year-old girl’s hair.’ So we went with putting color in rather than stripping it.”
Danes then joked that it “looked like I murdered people every time I took a shower” because of the red dye used for the show.
It’s worthy of note that Bibb, 51, was Wednesday’s Jenna & Friends guest-host since Bush Hager had debuted her current bob cut back on the June 17 taping, where the actress also served as co-host. It was fitting having Bibb co-host on that day since Bush Hager revealed that her new haircut was inspired by the actress’ hairstyle in season 3 of The White Lotus.
