Jenna Bush Hager is no stranger to sharing heartfelt, funny, and sometimes surprising stories about motherhood — and her latest revelation about her eldest daughter’s name adds another charming chapter to the Bush family history.
During the December 4 episode of Jenna & Friends, the 44-year-old author and Today show co-host opened up about a moment from 2013 that still makes her laugh: the day her parents — former President George W. Bush and former First Lady Laura Bush — learned what she planned to name her firstborn.
Jenna explained that she had always loved the name Margaret Laura, a combination honoring both her maternal grandmother (Laura) and paternal grandmother (Margaret). But from the moment her daughter arrived, no one — including Jenna — called her anything but her sweet nickname: Mila.
That’s when an unexpected concern popped up from Jenna’s mom.
Laura Bush noticed right away that Texans, with their warm drawl and regional accents, were pronouncing the name differently — turning “MEE-la” into a longer, twangier “MY-la.” The former first lady, known for her grace and Southern sensibility, wanted to help her granddaughter avoid a lifetime of mispronunciations.
Her suggestion? Change the spelling.
“Mela,” she recommended — a spelling similar to names like Lela — hoping a slightly different arrangement of letters would guide people to say it the “right” way.

Jenna recalled the moment with humor, turning to guest host Scarlett Johansson as she relived it on-air.
“I was like, wait, you want me to change the spelling of my child’s name because in Texas they’re stretching it into ‘My-la’?” she said, laughing.
Johansson joked back, “Do you think that would really help?”
Jenna’s reply: “I haven’t seen that spelling anywhere!”
Ultimately, the name — and the spelling — stayed exactly how Jenna intended. And now, more than a decade later, the pronunciation debate has turned into just another fun family story for the mother of three to share on television.
Jenna and husband Henry Chase Hager welcomed Mila — officially Margaret Laura Hager — on April 13, 2013. Her arrival transformed the former first daughter into a mother, a role Jenna says she cherishes more deeply than any other.
Two years later, the couple welcomed another daughter, Poppy, followed by their son Hal in 2019. From school events to holiday traditions, Jenna has always been refreshingly open about the joys and challenges of parenting, regularly sharing glimpses into family life on Today and across social media.

Her Thanksgiving post this year was simple but full of emotion:
“The luckiest! Happy Thanksgiving, all!” — written beneath a cheerful family photo of all five Hagers.
Beyond the jokes and playful family stories, Jenna also reflects seriously on what it means to raise children today.
Recently, she published an entry in her Voices at the Table newsletter that left many fans moved. In it, she shared one of Mila’s school assignments — a writing prompt titled “I want”.
Her 12-year-old’s answers were wise well beyond her years:
- “I want the world to be peaceful and scary stuff to be fake.”
- “I want to meet my mom when she was my age.”
Jenna admitted these simple, thoughtful lines brought her to tears. They also forced her to reflect: when she was a tween growing up in the White House spotlight, did she worry about the state of the world the same way her daughter does now?

“I realized that sometimes I find the most comfort in the beauty and innocence of my children,” she wrote. “All I have to do is read their assignments, cuddle with them at night, pay attention to the creative and loving things they say — and then I feel like our world is filled with such profound and sparkly hope.”
Jenna has spoken often about the close bond she shares with her parents — particularly her mother. Laura Bush, once America’s first lady, is a grandmother who sends notes, offers advice (whether needed or not), and deeply loves her grandchildren.
And that love sometimes comes with suggestions — like altering a baby name to make life a bit easier.
Whether the family is debating pronunciation, celebrating holidays, or navigating digital-age parenting, there is always a sense of connection. After all, the Bush family has always valued tradition, storytelling, and humor — qualities Jenna carries into her own home today.

And while Mila’s name stays spelled exactly as Jenna chose, the story behind it has become something much bigger: a shared moment across generations, a memory that continues to bring joy, and a reminder that every family — even one with a former president and first lady — has relatable, wonderfully imperfect conversations.
Jenna summed it up perfectly: she is simply grateful to be a mom, grateful to learn from her children, and grateful for the family — including the one who suggested “Mela” — that shaped her into the parent she is now.
