Jimmy Kimmel returned to his late-night show after being pulled off the air on Sept. 17 following backlash over comments related to Charlie Kirk’s assassination.
The suspension drew criticism from Republican Sen. Ted Cruz, who defended Kimmel on his podcast.
“Even my old pal Ted Cruz — who, believe it or not, said something very beautiful on my behalf,” Kimmel said during his return, who appeared emotional at times during his monologue.
On his Sept. 19 podcast, Cruz said removing Kimmel from the air would “end up bad for conservatives.”
Kimmel responded, “I don’t think I’ve ever said this — Ted Cruz is right.”Looking for a free mini puzzle? Play the USA TODAY Quick Cross now.

Ted Cruz ‘Goodfellas’
Sen. Ted Cruz, in a Sept. 19 episode of his podcast, criticized Federal Communications Commission Chairman Brendan Carr for threatening to revoke ABC’s broadcast license before the network suspended “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” following backlash over comments related to Kirk’s assassination.
Cruz likened Carr’s remarks to mob-style intimidation.
“He says, ‘We can do this the easy way or we can do this the hard way,’” Cruz said. “That’s right out of ‘Goodfellas.’ Like a mafioso walking into a bar saying, ‘Nice bar you have here. It’d be a shame if something happened to it.’”
