The Houston Astros received confirmation of what many already suspected after Josh Hader’s first bullpen session of the spring — their All-Star closer will not be ready for Opening Day.

Astros manager Joe Espada confirmed Wednesday that Hader will begin the 2026 season on the 15-day injured list, though the team remains hopeful that his absence will be short-term.
Slow radar readings raised concerns

Hader recently threw his first bullpen session of the spring and reportedly felt good afterward. However, the radar gun told a different story.
During the session, the left-hander threw 15 pitches — all fastballs — and none registered above 87 mph.
Even though Espada had instructed Hader to ease into his throwing program, the reduced velocity made it clear that he is still well behind schedule.
As a result, Houston’s decision-makers concluded that the veteran reliever would not be ready in time for the start of the season.
Injuries have delayed Hader’s progress

Hader has not appeared in a game since September 2025, when he was sidelined with a left shoulder capsule strain that caused him to miss the final two months of last season.
Once spring training began, he was already playing catch-up in his recovery. Complicating matters further was biceps tendinitis, which slowed his progress even more.
Because of that extended layoff — nearly six weeks without throwing — the Astros determined it would be unrealistic to rush him back for Opening Day.
It is still unclear whether Hader will go on a minor league rehab assignment or remain in Florida to continue building up his arm strength.
Bryan Abreu likely to fill closer role

Hader’s absence creates an opportunity for Bryan Abreu, who is expected to step in as Houston’s closer to begin the season.
Abreu already proved capable of handling the role late in 2025, filling in effectively while Hader was sidelined.
The 28-year-old right-hander now has another chance to showcase his ability in the ninth inning — and potentially increase his value before hitting free agency next offseason.
Bullpen decisions still pending

While the closer situation appears settled for now, the Astros still have several bullpen roster decisions to make before Opening Day.
A number of relievers have performed well during spring training, leaving Espada and the front office with tough choices about which pitchers will travel to Houston when camp breaks.
Those decisions are expected to be finalized within the next week as the team prepares for the start of the 2026 MLB season.
