Every December, the Royal Family heads to Sandringham for their cherished Christmas traditions, a time filled with family moments, festive celebrations, and plenty of royal rituals. The royals are known for enjoying classic holiday traditions, such as opening presents on Christmas Eve and walking to church while engaging with members of the public. However, former royal butler Grant Harrold recently speculated that King Charles may make a “big change” and relocate this annual holiday gathering to Windsor Castle in the future, as he looks to modernize certain aspects of royal life (via GB News). Despite these potential changes, the Sandringham estate continues to be a focal point for the holiday season, as the estate shared an exciting update on October 1 about its upcoming festive event.

Luminate UK, a well-known seasonal event, will once again light up the Sandringham Royal Parkland, turning it into an enchanting after-dark wonderland. The event promises a stunning trail lit by thousands of twinkling lights, all set to music, creating a magical atmosphere for visitors. Alongside the mesmerizing light display, guests can enjoy holiday food and drinks, marshmallow toasting, and even fairground rides—offering something for everyone in the family to enjoy. The event will also be dog-friendly on specific nights, allowing well-behaved pets to join in the festivities. This could be a perfect opportunity for Prince William and Princess Kate to bring along their beloved cocker spaniel, Orla, who has recently made her TV debut with Prince William on Eugene Levy’s The Reluctant Traveler on Apple TV+.

The event at Sandringham is one that royal fans know the royal children would surely enjoy. In fact, Princess Eugenie and her mother, Sarah Ferguson, attended a similar event, Windsor Illuminated, in December 2024, bringing along Eugenie’s young sons, August and Ernest. With Prince William, Princess Kate, and their children—Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis—now residing at Forest Lodge in Windsor Great Park, it wouldn’t be surprising to spot them at Windsor Illuminated this year. However, with the family traditionally traveling to Sandringham for Christmas, it’s entirely possible that they will take part in the festivities at the Sandringham event as well.

The Royals seem to be keeping up the tradition of magical outings. Just before the end of September, Princess Kate took her children on a special trip to the set of HBO’s new Harry Potter series, located in Windsor Great Park. According to a source, “It was so special, Kate and the children met the young actors and the director on the set. There was only one night of filming there, so it really was a magical ticket.” This delightful visit highlights the close-knit family dynamic that Kate and William prioritize in their lives, offering their children memorable experiences that blend both royalty and magic.

While the Royal Family’s annual holiday visit to Sandringham remains a beloved tradition, it’s clear that they are also embracing new opportunities for family bonding and magical experiences. Whether they attend the festive event at Sandringham or enjoy the lights of Windsor Illuminated, the Wales family is ensuring their children’s childhoods are filled with the wonder and joy of the season. As the royals continue to celebrate time-honored customs and create new memories, it’s a reminder of the importance of family traditions—whether they take place in a historic palace or in the midst of twinkling lights and festive fun.
