Speculation continues to mount over Prince Andrew’s future at Royal Lodge, the Windsor Estate home he shares with his ex-wife Sarah Ferguson. Reports now suggest King Charles may be preparing to reassign the historic property — and the potential new occupants could be none other than his youngest brother, Prince Edward, and Duchess Sophie.

A “Thank You” From the King
According to royal commentator Richard Kay, Charles has considered gifting Royal Lodge to the Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh as a gesture of gratitude. The couple has taken on a heavier workload in recent months, stepping in for both the King and Princess Kate as they undergo cancer treatment.
“Charles has entertained the thought of offering Royal Lodge to his youngest brother, Prince Edward,” Kay revealed to the Daily Mail. “The king has been hugely impressed by the manner in which Edward and his wife, Sophie, have increased their workload since their elevation to Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh.”

Sophie, the “Secret Weapon” of the Royal Family
Duchess Sophie, often described as the monarchy’s “secret weapon,” has long been admired by both insiders and the public. The Mirror notes her close bond with the late Queen Elizabeth II, forged soon after she married Prince Edward in 1999.
From a discreet four-day visit to Iraq last month to her regular appearances at Royal Ascot and Wimbledon, Sophie has proven herself to be a dependable working royal. She has also built a warm relationship with Princess Charlotte and a sisterly closeness with Princess Kate.

Jennie Bond of the BBC describes her as “a natural, humble woman—clearly still very much in love with her husband—and a woman who has grown into her role without fuss or fanfare.” Bond adds, “I have no doubt that Sophie has been someone to whom Catherine has frequently turned as a confidante and friend.”
What About Prince Andrew?
If Charles does move forward with the plan, Prince Andrew may be asked to vacate Royal Lodge. The Mirror reports that he has been offered the use of Craigowan Lodge, a seven-bedroom property on the Balmoral estate in Scotland. The cottage holds historical significance, as it was where then-Prince Charles and Lady Diana Spencer announced their engagement in 1981.
A Royal Transition in Motion
While no official announcement has been made, the speculation underscores how King Charles is reshaping royal life in response to health challenges and public perception. The potential reassignment of Royal Lodge reflects both gratitude toward Edward and Sophie and a clear signal about Andrew’s increasingly diminished role within the monarchy.
