Right now, it looks like the New York Liberty have planted their flag and let the WNBA world know that they are here to win it all again. The Liberty are off to a stellar 9-0 start this season, standing tall and looking down at the rest of the competition.
How good have the Liberty been so far? They have knocked off every opponent that they have faced. New York is the last unbeaten team in the WNBA. Breanna Stewart has been playing lights-out ball on the court every game. Their defensive schemes seem to throw opponents off all the time.
Let’s also not forget the great job Liberty head coach Sandy Brondello seems to be doing right now. Brondello is pushing all the right buttons, making sure her offensive game plan works to perfection.
In a new article, ESPN.com is giving the Liberty an “A” as it dishes out grades after one month of the WNBA season. It’s not a stretch to say that, outside of the Minnesota Lynx, New York is in prime position to repeat again as WNBA champions.
New York Liberty simply drowning opponents on offensive side
ESPN writer Alexa Philippou points out that New York is outscoring their opponents by 171 points. That’s incredible. Besides Stewart, Natasha Cloud and Kennedy Burke are playing at high levels. Philippou also points out that New York is still waiting for Nyara Sabally and Jonquel Jones to play at full speed. They have been nursing injuries, stifling their playing time.
New York leads in both offensive and defensive ratings, sitting at a 23.4 net rating. That’s head and shoulders above where the Lynx (10.9) sit right now.
The real question around the WNBA has to be focused on who might just topple the Liberty. New York fans know that their team has a bull’s-eye on their backs with other WNBA teams wanting to give the Liberty their first loss.
