To accompany the premiere date on August 26 of the second season of her Netflix series With Love, Meghan, Meghan Markle sat down for an interview with Bloomberg’s Emily Chang on Tuesday, where she shared the bit of royal protocol that she wasn’t a big fan of.At Only Seven Prince Louis Makes History With A Title That Leaves Princess Catherine Overcome With Joy And Pride

On “The Circuit” in a segment called “Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex, on Life and Business Beyond the Royal Spotlight,” the Duchess of Sussex spoke about the importance of authenticity and that she didn’t feel that she could be 100 percent authentic while still a working royal.Meghan Markle at Trooping the Colour in 2018.

Though she said she always tried to be herself, Meghan said, “It was different several years ago, where I couldn’t be as vocal.”
As for the unwritten royal protocol rules that existed in particular when Queen Elizabeth was alive? “I had to wear nude pantyhose all the time,” Meghan told Chang. “Let’s be honest—that was not very myself.”Meghan Markle and Prince Harry on July 26, 2018.

“That felt a little bit inauthentic, but that’s a silly example,” Meghan continued. “But it is an example of when you’re able to dress the way you want to dress, you’re able to say the things that are true, and you’re able to show up in a space really organically and authentically—that’s being comfortable in your own skin.”
“Right now, I don’t feel I need to prove anything,” she added.Meghan Markle at the TIME100 Summit on April 23, 2025.

According to Hello!’s royal correspondent Danielle Stacey, when it comes to pantyhose, “Wearing tights isn’t a protocol as such, but it has been viewed as [an] unwritten rule that royal ladies wear tights during public engagements, with the likes of the Princess of Wales and the Duchess of Edinburgh following the late Queen Elizabeth’s lead. We have seen a few occasions when the royals have chosen to go bare-legged, but this is generally for less formal engagements.”
Some other accepted fashion protocols—particularly put in place before Queen Elizabeth died in 2022—include wearing lighter nail polish, which was the preference of the late Queen. Her personal favorite was Essie’s Ballet Slippers, and royal women often followed her lead when it came to their manicures.Meghan Markle on October 3, 2018.

Another royal fashion protocol that still very much exists? Bringing a black outfit while traveling in the event that a member of the royal family should pass away while the royal is away. This happened to Queen Elizabeth herself, when she was in Kenya in 1952 when her father King George VI died unexpectedly and she had no mourning clothes at her immediate disposal, forcing her to wait inside the plane for a black outfit to be delivered before stepping outside it.
Meghan previously spoke on her 2022 Netflix docuseries Harry & Meghan that she rarely wore color as a working royal, adhering to more muted tones as she knew Queen Elizabeth liked to wear bright colors.Meghan Markle and Queen Elizabeth on June 14, 2018.

“To my understanding, you could never wear the same color as Her Majesty if there’s a group event, but then you also shouldn’t be wearing the same color as one of the other more senior members of the family,” she said. “So I was like, ‘Well, what’s a color that they’ll probably never wear?’ Camel, beige, white. So I wore a lot of muted tones, but it was also so I could just blend in. I’m not trying to stand out here. There was no version of me joining this family and not doing everything I could to fit in. I don’t want to embarrass the family.”Meghan Markle on Emily Chang’s “The Circuit”.

For what it’s worth, those days of wearing muted tones are over—for her interview with Chang, the Duchess of Sussex wore a bright yellow Jenni Kayne ensemble that was impossible to miss, according to fashion site What Meghan Wore.
