Meghan Markle shared an emotional moment on The Drew Barrymore Show that left both the audience — and host Drew Barrymore — visibly touched. During her appearance to promote her Netflix series With Love, Meghan and her lifestyle brand As Ever, the Duchess of Sussex was caught off guard when Barrymore presented a black-and-white photo from 1982 — a snapshot of seven-year-old Drew meeting the late Princess Diana at the London premiere of E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial.

The image showed a beaming young Barrymore handing her E.T. doll to the Princess of Wales — a meeting the actress has described as “the most exciting moment of my childhood.” Seeing the photo for the first time, Meghan’s eyes widened. “Oh, how sweet. Oh, that’s beautiful,” she said softly, clearly moved. “Oh my gosh. Look at your little face! That is so special.”
Barrymore, now 50, smiled warmly as the audience clapped. “It means so much to me to have met such an incredible human being who transcended everything. It was the honor of my life,” she told Meghan. The Duchess nodded in agreement, responding, “Oh my gosh, well, I will tell H that for sure,” referring affectionately to her husband, Prince Harry.

The conversation took on a tender tone as they reflected on Diana’s legacy — the “People’s Princess” whose compassion and humanity broke royal traditions and captured hearts across the globe. Diana’s death in 1997, after a tragic car crash in Paris, remains one of the most defining and heartbreaking moments of modern royal history. For both Meghan and Harry, her memory remains a guiding force. In fact, their daughter’s middle name, Diana, stands as a tribute to the mother Harry lost at just 12 years old.
Barrymore, who had shared the same photo years earlier during an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, once described the moment as “surreal and life-changing.” She remembered Diana’s kindness vividly: “I have to say, growing up with her as a princess was such a good example.”

For Meghan, whose public image has often been compared to Diana’s, the moment was more than nostalgia — it was a bridge between two women often scrutinized yet celebrated for their empathy and independence. In that brief exchange, the duchess seemed genuinely emotional — not as a royal, not as a celebrity, but as a daughter-in-law honoring the woman whose legacy continues to shape her family’s story.
