Thomas Markle, the father of Meghan Markle, has strongly criticized his daughter and son-in-law, Prince Harry, for their decision to step down from royal duties, calling it an act of “betrayal” to both the British monarchy and its long-standing traditions. In a recent interview with Channel 5, one day after Buckingham Palace announced that Harry and Meghan would relinquish their royal titles and pursue financial independence, Thomas expressed his deep disappointment.
“I’m very disappointed because Meghan had everything that every girl dreams of,” Markle said. “Every girl wants to be a princess, and Meghan had that, but now she’s giving it up.” According to him, this choice is not only a personal setback but also a blow to the prestigious values that the British monarchy has upheld for centuries.
With deep admiration for the British Royal Family, Thomas Markle feels that this situation is a serious loss for both the family and its supporters. “The British Royal Family is one of the oldest and most respected in the world. They are tearing it apart, cheapening it… they shouldn’t be doing this,” he shared angrily.
Prince Harry, 35, who is sixth in line to the British throne, married American actress Meghan Markle, 38, in May 2018, and since their marriage, they have become the focus of intense media attention. Meghan, with her background as an American actress of African descent, quickly became the center of public scrutiny. Harry himself spoke in an October interview about feeling that Meghan was being “bullied” by the press, and how their lives became increasingly uncomfortable under constant media attention. This could very well explain their decision to step away from royal life.
However, the decision for Harry and Meghan to step down from their royal roles still sparks fierce debate. Meghan’s father believes this is an unthoughtful choice and a betrayal of both the family and everything they’ve been given. “They don’t understand what they are giving up, and they don’t understand the consequences of this decision,” he added.
