Since arriving in the majors, the 24-year-old right-hander has quickly shifted from intriguing prospect to cornerstone talent. His performance in 2025 didn’t just meet expectations — it raised them.
Now, a new question is beginning to surface: how long will he remain in Queens?
McLean’s rookie campaign was nothing short of impressive.
He finished with a 5-1 record, a 2.06 ERA, and 57 strikeouts across 46 innings — numbers that immediately placed him among the most promising young arms in baseball. Even though the Mets fell short of the postseason, McLean emerged as one of the team’s biggest positives.

And perhaps more importantly, one of its most valuable assets moving forward.
There were minor bumps along the way.
His performance in the World Baseball Classic didn’t quite match his major league success, but feedback from coaches and teammates remained overwhelmingly positive. Internally, the Mets appear confident they are building around a future ace.
That belief makes the contract situation all the more interesting.
On paper, there’s no urgency.
McLean remains under team control through the 2031 season, giving the Mets several years before free agency becomes a concern. But in today’s game, waiting can come at a cost — especially when a player’s value is trending sharply upward.
And right now, McLean’s value is climbing.
According to MLB insider Jon Heyman, the Mets have not yet engaged in serious long-term extension discussions with the young pitcher. The absence of early negotiations stands out, particularly given how aggressive teams have become in locking up emerging stars.
It’s not necessarily a red flag.
Both sides appear focused on the upcoming season, and there’s no immediate pressure to finalize a deal. But the longer talks are delayed, the greater the potential price tag becomes.
That’s the balancing act facing the Mets’ front office.
President of Baseball Operations David Stearns understands what McLean could become — and what he could cost if he continues on this trajectory. Securing a deal now could provide long-term stability and cost certainty.
Waiting, on the other hand, carries risk.
If McLean builds on his rookie season and solidifies himself as a top-tier starter, his future contract could escalate quickly. By the time he approaches free agency, he would still be in his prime — a combination that rarely comes cheap.
For now, there’s no tension — just timing.
The Mets have a rising star under control and a window to act before his value peaks. Whether they choose to move early or remain patient could shape the franchise’s financial and competitive outlook for years.
In the meantime, McLean will take the mound with expectations growing by the start.
And with every dominant outing, the decision facing the Mets becomes a little more urgent.
