Noah Wyle finally has an Emmy for playing a doctor on television. Wyle won best lead actor in a drama series for his turn as the weary Dr. Michael Robinavitch in “The Pitt,” which he also executive produces.
“What a dream this has been,” the 54-year-old actor said as he clutched his award. He thanked those at HBO Max and Warner Brothers for “allowing the conditions to exist for lightning to strike in my life twice.” He also paid tribute to real life hospital workers. “To anybody who is going on shift tonight or coming off shift tonight, thank you for being in that job,” he said. “This is for you.”
Wyle was nominated five times between 1995 and 1999 for his supporting work as John Carter in “E.R.,” but he never won.
“The Pitt” reunited Wyle with his “E.R.” colleagues R. Scott Gemmill, who created the HBO Max show, and John Wells, an executive producer. The first season took place over the course of one harrowing shift at a Pittsburgh hospital, during which Dr. Robby deals with a steady stream of illnesses and gruesome injuries — as well as his own trauma from watching his mentor die of Covid years earlier — with a mix of empathy and no-nonsense professionalism.
Wyle beat out a field that included Adam Scott for “Severance”; Pedro Pascal for “The Last of Us”; Sterling K. Brown for “Paradise”; and Gary Oldman for “Slow Horses.”
