Savannah Guthrie has shared some memorable moments from her life on television — but none as jaw-dropping as the story she told on The Kelly Clarkson Show. The TODAY coanchor left both Kelly and the audience in stunned laughter when she revealed that she actually broke up with her husband, Michael Feldman, the very same day he proposed to her.
Guthrie, who met Feldman in 2008 and tied the knot in 2014, began her story by explaining that, after five and a half years of dating, she had started to lose hope that marriage was in their future. “We weren’t twenty when we got married,” she told Clarkson, laughing. “So it was like… jump in the deep end any moment, sir!” Even her mother, she added, had started to push for action, telling the couple, “You two need to either do it or don’t. Just do something.”
When the pair took a trip to the beach, Guthrie was convinced it would just be another vacation — not the start of their engagement. “At that point, you’re not getting your nails done,” she joked, saying she’d already accepted that a proposal wasn’t coming. Instead, she decided to take control of the situation. Sitting down with Feldman, she told him gently but firmly, “Honey, we love each other, but this has gone on too long. I think it’s time to say goodbye.”
What Guthrie didn’t know was that Feldman had an engagement ring in his pocket the entire time. “He was planning to propose that day!” she said, recalling how she spent the rest of the afternoon “weepy” and heartbroken, unaware that her breakup speech had just thrown a major wrench into his plans.

Later that evening, Feldman asked Guthrie to join him for a glass of champagne on the balcony. Thinking it was one last toast to their relationship, she agreed — only to watch him drop to one knee and pull out the ring. “It was so shocking to me,” she told Clarkson. “And I was so happy. It turned out to be one of the best days of my life.”
The story — equal parts hilarious, awkward, and heartwarming — has since become a fan favorite among TODAY viewers, showing the coanchor’s humor and humility. More than a decade later, Guthrie and Feldman remain happily married, raising their two children, Vale and Charley.
Recently, Guthrie celebrated another milestone — the end of her book tour for Mostly What God Does Is Love You — with a deeply personal new tattoo. On her inner forearm, she had two tiny hearts inked, each drawn by one of her children. “It’s the sweetest thing I’ve ever done,” she said.
From an almost breakup to a surprise proposal and a lasting marriage, Savannah Guthrie’s love story proves that sometimes the best moments in life are the ones that don’t go as planned — and that a twist of fate can turn heartbreak into forever.
