The Kansas City Chiefs appear to be back on track, at least for now. If they can continue to grind through this grueling schedule and put up wins, they will, once again, be buyers at the trade deadline. What kind of help will they be seeking out through trades though?
With Xavier Worthy back in the lineup and Rashee Rice returning in three weeks, the Chiefs won’t need wide receiver help, at least not as of this writing. Where they could use help offensively, however, is at running back.
Matt Verderame and Gilberto Manzano of Sports Illustrated have just the solution for the Chiefs there, proposing that the Chiefs send a fifth-round pick to the New Orleans Saints to land Alvin Kamara.
“If the Chiefs can acquire Kamara from New Orleans for a late-round pick, it’s a no-brainer. Kansas City has only $3 million in cap space, but Kamara’s cap hit is a proration of $2.9 million before a nonguaranteed 11.5 million next year. Through four games, Kamara has 256 rushing yards and a touchdown.”
Chiefs trading for Alvin Kamara would make a ton of sense
Some people might point out that Kamara is 30 years old and was taken in the same draft as current Chiefs running back Kareem Hunt. Why trade anything for a 30-year-old running back, those people might ask?
Well, because even though he’s 30 years old, Kamara doesn’t play like he is. He had 950 rushing yards and six rushing touchdowns for a bad Saints team last year and tallied 543 receiving yards and two touchdowns through the air as well. He’s a multi-threat back and Andy Reid and Patrick Mahomes would love having him in their offense.
At 0-4, the Saints aren’t going anywhere and, while they might not admit it, they’re in a rebuild. That means pretty much anyone on their roster should be up for grabs and that includes Kamara. The trade would give Kamara a chance to play for not just a winning team but a Super Bowl contender and it’d give the Chiefs a boost to their rushing attack.
Feels like a win-win, does it not? Some might think a fifth-rounder might be a bit much for Kamara but if he can help this team improve in the run game, Brett Veach should 100% go for it.
