In recent days, the political atmosphere in Washington has not only been heated, but also turbulent like a life-and-death game between powerful hands. On one hand, the American people have just witnessed a historic scene: former President Donald Trump was convicted of 34 criminal charges, becoming the first “convicted criminal” to ever sit in the number one seat of power in the United States. On the other hand, the government has been fiercely controversial when former FBI Director James Comey was unexpectedly indicted on two charges – but this time, the reaction of Democratic leaders has been completely opposite.
“No one is above the law,” Nancy Pelosi once said in a voice like a Supreme Court judge in San Francisco in 2019, when talking about Donald Trump. But now, with Comey – a former ally – being dragged into the light, that mantra has suddenly become a distorted echo.
In the halls of Congress, the stampeding of reporters’ boots, the flashbulbs flashing, and the echoing question: Is justice being served, or is it just a political revenge drama dressed up as law?
Two Sides of the Same Coin
Joe Biden, standing at the podium, solemnly declared: “The American legal system operates independently. It was a public trial, a jury of 12 ordinary citizens, and they unanimously convicted Trump.”
But Biden himself, just a few days later, bluntly called the Comey prosecution “dangerous, reckless, vindictive.” This apparent contradiction immediately fueled suspicion: Is the slogan “no one above the law” reserved only for political enemies, while allies are “implicitly immune”?
Chuck Schumer was more vehement. “I have no faith in the Trump justice system,” he declared on NBC. “He’s turned it into a personal weapon, targeting people who aren’t on his side.”
But an anonymous Justice Department source who leaked the information to our tabloids asserted: “Schumer knows more than he’s letting on. There are secret calls, shadowy deals, and a ‘no-touch’ list. Comey was on that list—until he wasn’t useful anymore.”
Conspiracy or justice?
In Washington coffee shops, political insiders whisper about the “hidden hand” behind the scenes. There’s a theory that Comey’s downfall was not Trump’s doing, but the result of a Democratic faction trying to get rid of an uncontrollable remnant.
A former FBI agent, who asked not to be named, shared: “He (Comey) knew too much. From secret Russian files to buried emails from the political elite. If someone wanted to silence him, pushing him to court was the best way – both legal and a deterrent message.”
On the other hand, Trump supporters saw this as absolute proof of the long-standing argument: Washington is a swamp. They shouted at rallies: “Swamp! Swamp!” – “Swamp! Swamp!” as if to expose the whole system. In their eyes, the Comey prosecution was Trump’s “necessary counterattack” to expose “those who consider themselves above the law.”
Media exploded, social media stirred
On the night the news broke, Twitter, Facebook, and TikTok exploded. One side launched the hashtag #NoOneAboveTheLaw with a photo of Trump bowing his head in the courtroom. The other side responded with #SelectiveJustice, accusing Pelosi – Biden – Schumer of hypocrisy.
Crowds gathered in front of the courthouse where Comey was about to appear. Some carried “Dirty Cop” signs, others held up “Stop Political Revenge” signs. Police sirens, chants, and the smell of smoke from street vendors mixed in the thick air.
Media outlets competed to edit videos: the scene of Trump gritting his teeth and declaring “This is justice, not revenge” was shown over and over, interspersed with images of Pelosi shouting “no one is above the law.” The audience watched, laughing sarcastically, angry, and caught up in a never-ending political drama.
Two opposing views
Stream 1: Believing in distorted justice
Democrats believe that the Comey case is “Trump’s revenge,” a campaign to intimidate anyone who dares to challenge him. For them, Trump is the one who destroys the rule of law, turning justice into a tool.
Stream 2: Believe in a conspiracy to cover up
On the contrary, many Republicans and conservatives believe that the fierce opposition of Pelosi – Biden – Schumer only proves one thing: they are afraid of the truth being exposed. For them, the slogan “no one is above the law” is just a gimmick to disguise a system of privilege.
