Philadelphia Phillies ace Aaron Nola delivered one of the standout pitching performances of the World Baseball Classic this week, helping Team Italy secure a spot in the quarterfinals with a dominant win over Mexico.

Nola threw five scoreless innings in Italy’s 9–1 victory, allowing just a handful of baserunners while keeping a dangerous Mexican lineup under control. His outing proved crucial not only for Italy’s tournament hopes but also indirectly helped Team USA advance because of the tournament’s tiebreaker rules.
After the game, Nola spoke about the performance, the tournament atmosphere, and how his arm feels as the MLB season approaches.
A dominant outing against strong competition

Nola threw 69 pitches over five innings, allowing five baserunners and never letting Mexico mount any real offensive momentum. Only one hitter managed to reach second base during his outing.
The lineup he faced was no easy assignment either.
Mexico’s top four hitters featured Jarren Duran, Randy Arozarena, Jonathan Aranda, and Blue Jays catcher Alejandro Kirk, all proven major league hitters capable of doing damage.
Still, Nola kept them quiet with a mix of fastballs and his signature curveball. His fastball reached 94.5 mph, while his curve generated several swings and misses.
“I got ahead pretty well,” Nola said after the game.
“The fastball had a little jump to it early on. And I felt the command was there, so it set up my curveball.”
Italy advances with perfect group performance

Italy finished 4–0 in pool play, an impressive run that few predicted before the tournament began.
Nola credited the team’s chemistry and focus for the surprising success.
“Everybody’s bought in,” Nola said.
“These games matter a lot. We take it one game at a time. Win one game each day, and that’s kind of the mindset in that clubhouse.”
The atmosphere, according to Nola, felt far different from typical exhibition games.
“The environment was really cool. It’s a playoff atmosphere,” he said. “It’s pretty awesome.”
Helping Team USA — without trying to

Italy’s win also had an interesting side effect.
Under WBC tiebreaker rules, Team USA could have been eliminated depending on how the Italy–Mexico game played out. Nola’s strong outing ensured that scenario never happened.
However, the Phillies right-hander said his team wasn’t thinking about the impact on the Americans.
“I didn’t hear from anybody,” Nola said when asked if USA players had reached out.
“We were just focusing on the game. We’re going to go out and try to win a baseball game, and that’s what we did tonight.”
Feeling strong ahead of MLB season

One of the most encouraging takeaways from the outing for Phillies fans was how healthy and strong Nola looked.
The veteran pitcher said the high-stakes environment actually helped him perform.
“I feel good. I feel really good,” Nola said.
“The atmosphere and the stakes of the game made it a little bit easier to go out there and throw five innings.”
He added that the outing felt much more exciting than a typical spring training start.
“It’s obviously a little bit different than a spring training start. A little bit more fun.”
Playing for family and heritage

For Nola, representing Italy carried personal significance.
The pitcher revealed that several family members were in attendance, and that his father’s side of the family has Italian roots.
“Wearing ‘Italy’ is definitely an honor,” Nola said.
“I’m honored that they asked me to play in this.”
He added that representing his heritage meant a great deal.
“It means a lot. It really does. I’m glad to represent Italy the best way I can.”
A memorable night for Italy
Nola wasn’t the only star of the game.
Team captain Vinnie Pasquantino had an unforgettable performance, hitting three home runs in the victory. Nola praised the Royals first baseman for his leadership and energy.
“He runs the clubhouse,” Nola said. “He gets everybody going every day.”
Ready for what’s next
With Italy advancing to the World Baseball Classic quarterfinals, Nola’s performance helped cement the team as one of the tournament’s biggest surprises.
And perhaps most importantly for Philadelphia fans, the veteran right-hander appears healthy, confident, and ready for the upcoming MLB season.
