The Philadelphia Phillies have made their decision behind the plate — and it likely signals the end of Garrett Stubbs’ time in red pinstripes.

With J.T. Realmuto locked in as the starter and Rafael Marchán earning the backup role, Stubbs has been squeezed off the roster. Now, as Opening Day approaches, the Phillies are reportedly exploring trade options for their longtime backup catcher and clubhouse favorite.
It’s not about talent as much as it is roster math.
Stubbs has been a valuable presence for Philadelphia, both as a serviceable catcher and as a respected voice in the clubhouse. But with limited spots available and Marchán offering more upside, the Phillies are looking to move him rather than risk losing him for nothing.
So where could he land?
🔵 Tampa Bay Rays
If there’s a team built to take advantage of this situation, it’s Tampa Bay.
The Rays are known for finding value in overlooked players — and their current catching situation leaves plenty of room for improvement. Projected starter Nick Fortes is defense-first, while backup Hunter Feduccia offers little offensive production.
Stubbs wouldn’t transform the lineup, but he would represent a clear upgrade in experience and offensive capability over Feduccia. For a low-cost return, Tampa Bay could add a steady presence behind the plate.
🟣 Colorado Rockies

The Rockies are in a different place entirely — rebuilding and searching for depth everywhere.
While Hunter Goodman emerged as a bright spot last season, the depth behind him is thin. Brett Sullivan and Braxton Fulford don’t provide much certainty, leaving room for a player like Stubbs to step in as a more reliable option.
For Colorado, this would be a simple depth move. For the Phillies, it would likely mean a modest return — perhaps a lower-level prospect or bullpen arm.
🟡 San Diego Padres
San Diego represents the most competitive landing spot.
The Padres are built to contend but have question marks at catcher. Freddy Fermin currently leads the group, with former top prospect Luis Campusano struggling to find his footing.
Stubbs wouldn’t be brought in as a starter, but he could serve as a valuable insurance policy — a veteran who can handle a pitching staff and provide stability if things go sideways.
⚾ What Happens Next?

The reality is that Stubbs won’t command a major return.
But that’s not the point.
For the Phillies, this is about maximizing roster efficiency and getting something — anything — in return for a player who no longer fits. For other teams, it’s an opportunity to add a capable catcher with big-league experience at minimal cost.
And for Stubbs, it’s likely the start of a new chapter.
After years as a fan favorite in Philadelphia, his role may be changing — but his value around the league remains clear.
