The Prince of Wales has shared his deep love for music, acknowledging that while it has always been an important part of his life, his own musical journey didn’t go as planned. Despite his attempts to master several instruments, William made it clear why he is determined to ensure his children are introduced to music from an early age.

During a recent visit to Symphony Studios, a creative space located at the site of a former school in Lambeth, William had the opportunity to witness a vibrant performance by a group of young musicians. His praise for the students was heartfelt. “You’ve clearly worked very hard,” he said, admiring their energy and rhythm. “It takes real courage to play in front of others, and you did brilliantly. The rhythm, the energy — it sounded fantastic.”
William, who tried to learn various instruments in his youth — including the piano, trumpet, and drums — revealed that his biggest obstacle was never mastering the ability to read music. “I had to memorise everything, which became impossible,” he laughed, reflecting on his early musical challenges. “Eventually, it just fell away.” This experience, he explained, is precisely why he ensures that his own children, Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis, are being introduced to music as early as possible. “I love it, and it’s crucially important,” William emphasized.

When 16-year-old student Django Brooke invited William to try the drums, the Prince politely declined, joking, “I’m definitely not a drummer. But my youngest would have loved this — Louis is practising at the moment and he’d have jumped straight in.”

Music is clearly a strong tradition within the Royal Family. Princess Charlotte has already started learning the piano, following in the footsteps of her mother, the Princess of Wales, while Prince George is believed to be taking up the guitar. King Charles, William’s father, is also no stranger to music, having played the piano, trumpet, and cello in his youth. He has often spoken about how classical music is an essential part of his life.

For Prince William, the message is clear: music is not just a hobby, but a gift — one he is eager to pass down to his children, even if his own lessons didn’t last.
