It wasn’t planned, it wasn’t publicized — and most people missed it. But one subtle move from William, caught mid-event, revealed more about their bond than any royal statement ever could\
The Great British Bake Off star said of the future king, “I mean, he’s really such a wonderful man, you know. We’re so lucky with our royalty, aren’t we?”
“He wants to find out about how everybody is in the country,” she added. “He lives for all of us. I admire him. He sets an example.”
Beyond admiring William, Berry admires the Prince and Princess of Wales’ marriage, pointing to PDA that William does towards his wife that she’s picked up on: “There’s always a little arm around the back, encouraging her,” she said. “Early on when she started doing public life, he would chip in and say something really nice and encouraging, you know? He’s obviously immensely proud of her.”
“They give us—well, they give their life to all of us,” she continued.
The Prince and Princess of Wales and Berry are all patrons of Child Bereavement U.K., and they first met during a visit to the organization’s headquarters around 2013—just about two years into William and Kate’s marriage. In 2019, the couple appeared on Berry’s Christmas special, A Very Berry Christmas, on BBC 1, and shared how she had lost her 19-year-old son in a car accident—the same manner in which William lost his mother, Princess Diana, when he was just 15 years old in 1997.

“Prince William lost his mother at a very vulnerable age,” Berry said at the time. “And we lost our son, aged 19, in a car accident. So we both know what it is to be without someone very special. Christmas for us always holds mixed emotions, and I try to think of others who might not be having the best time.”

For Berry’s milestone 90th birthday earlier this year, William called her “a true national treasure” and added, “we’ve loved working with you over the years.”
“I dread to think who’s cooking your cake and the criticism they might get, but good luck, and I hope it goes really well,” he quipped.
William and Kate’s ever-increasing PDA—particularly after Kate’s cancer diagnosis in 2024—royal biographer Ingrid Seward told People, “They are happy for people to see them be touchy-feely. They’re in a different phase of their life now. William is very protective and very proud of her for coming through this and carrying on with her life.”

Fellow royal biographer Katie Nicholl told The Mirror that she’s “been with them on many occasions, and when the cameras drop, you’ll often see them walk away and Kate will put an arm around his waist, or he’ll place his hand in the small of her back.”

“There’s a lovely closeness between them, and whereas at the start of their marriage they seemed shy about being affectionate in public, they’re so much more confident now,” she added.
