That’s why it’s significant that Prince William might have just subtly acknowledged the ongoing tension between him and his estranged brother, Prince Harry.
On June 4, Prince William visited the Army Air Corps in Wattisham, Suffolk, in his official capacity as Colonel-in-Chief of the Corps. This visit may have seemed like just another royal engagement, but it was actually a pretty big deal. The position of Colonel-in-Chief was widely expected to go to Harry, especially since he trained as an Army Air Corps pilot in 2009. However, after stepping back from royal duties and relocating to California in 2020, Harry lost this title. Now, William holds the role that many assumed would have been his brother’s, a move that only adds fuel to the fire of their strained relationship.
During his visit, Prince William was interacting with soldiers when one of them mentioned that life was currently a “mixed bag.” To this, William responded with a line that seemed to hint at his own family dynamics: “Families okay? See you enough? Some of them might not want to see you that much. It’s a mixed bag sometimes.” While this could have been a lighthearted comment, it certainly felt like it could be coming from a place of personal experience. William’s remark seemed to reference the rift between him and Harry, the latter of whom moved to the U.S. to distance himself from the royal spotlight.
This subtle reference is a rare moment in which William seems to acknowledge the tension between the brothers, a tension that has only grown since Harry’s departure from royal life. According to reports, the two brothers were last in the same place at a memorial service for their uncle, Robert Fellowes, in August 2024, but they didn’t cross paths there. It appears that it could be some time before the brothers have a chance to interact again, and in the meantime, their fractured relationship continues to make headlines.
While Prince William’s comment may have been made in jest, it speaks volumes about the reality of family dynamics in the royal family. The distance between him and Harry is undeniable, and it’s clear that the brothers’ once close relationship is now far more complicated.
