Rep. Jasmine Crockett (D-Texas) is raising alarms after a controversial House vote that, she says, gives President Donald Trump the legal authority to deport U.S. citizens.
Speaking during an event livestreamed on social media, Crockett criticized the measure as one of the most “ridiculous” moves yet by her Republican colleagues.
“Y’all probably not gonna guess it because it don’t make sense,” Crockett told the audience. “But literally, they just voted — they being the other ones, not us, because we were all on the right side of history — they just voted to give Trump the ability, legally, to deport U.S. citizens.”

Her comments come as part of growing backlash among Democrats and immigrant-rights advocates who view the legislation as unconstitutional and dangerous. Critics argue the measure would set a troubling precedent, undermining citizenship protections guaranteed by the 14th Amendment.
While full details of the legislation remain under scrutiny, Crockett’s remarks highlight a broader concern: that Republican lawmakers continue to expand Trump’s authority on immigration enforcement beyond legal norms.
“Everything that they do is quite ridiculous,” she said, “but this goes even further.”
Crockett, a first-term congresswoman representing Texas’ 30th District, has emerged as one of the most vocal critics of Republican immigration policies. Her legal background as a civil rights attorney has shaped her stance against what she sees as authoritarian overreach.
The congresswoman’s comments quickly spread online, fueling heated discussions on X (formerly Twitter) and other platforms. Supporters applauded her for speaking plainly about the risks of unchecked executive power, while conservative voices defended the vote as a necessary step in addressing illegal immigration.
As the debate intensifies, constitutional scholars have warned that if upheld, the measure could spark a wave of legal challenges testing the very foundation of citizenship in the United States.
