Philadelphia Phillies manager Rob Thomson has spent much of spring training evaluating young players trying to carve out a future with the club. Among those looking to make a strong impression this year was Otto Kemp, and according to Thomson, the young infielder made the most of his opportunity.
Kemp arrived in camp without the fanfare that often surrounds top prospects. But as the weeks unfolded, his consistent effort and steady performance began to attract attention from the coaching staff.
For Thomson, the most encouraging aspect of Kemp’s spring wasn’t just the numbers on the stat sheet. It was the overall approach he brought to the field every day.
“He’s had a really solid camp,” Thomson noted when asked about Kemp’s progress. “He’s come in prepared, he’s worked hard, and he’s shown that he belongs in the conversation.”
Throughout spring training, Kemp focused on doing the little things well — making routine plays defensively, putting together competitive at-bats, and showing the kind of baseball awareness that managers value.
Those qualities don’t always make headlines, but they often determine whether a young player earns trust inside a clubhouse.
Kemp’s versatility has also worked in his favor. Capable of playing multiple infield positions, he has given the Phillies additional flexibility during exhibition games while allowing the coaching staff to evaluate where he might fit best long-term.
For a player still trying to establish himself within the organization, that adaptability can be critical.
Thomson emphasized that development remains the priority. While Kemp may not yet have a guaranteed path to the major league roster, the progress he showed this spring suggests he could factor into the team’s plans sooner rather than later.
Spring training often serves as a proving ground for players on the edge of the roster. Some fade into the background as competition intensifies. Others seize the opportunity to make an impression that lasts beyond March.
For Otto Kemp, this spring appears to have been a step in the right direction.
And if his progress continues at the same pace, Rob Thomson and the Phillies may soon find themselves with another intriguing infield option knocking on the door.
