Buckingham Palace has unveiled key details surrounding King Charles and Queen Camilla’s highly anticipated State Visit to the Vatican, marking a significant moment in their diplomatic and ecumenical journey. From October 22nd to 23rd, the royal couple will undertake an historic visit to the Holy See to meet Pope Leo XIV, a meeting that will coincide with the celebration of the 2025 Jubilee Year. This momentous occasion will be the first time King Charles and Queen Camilla have met Pope Leo XIV since his election in May 2025.

The Jubilee Year, celebrated by the Catholic Church every 25 years, will serve as the backdrop for the royal visit, reflecting a shared theme of unity and mutual respect. The visit symbolizes the ongoing ecumenical efforts between the Catholic Church and the Church of England, of which King Charles is the Supreme Governor. The theme of the Jubilee, “Pilgrims of Hope,” will underscore the spirit of the royal visit, which seeks to emphasize shared faith and collaboration.

Among the planned engagements, the most notable event will be a unique ecumenical service at the Sistine Chapel, where King Charles and Pope Leo XIV will pray together, an act of deep symbolic significance in strengthening the relationship between the two Christian denominations. Additionally, the King and Queen will participate in another ecumenical service at the Basilica of St Paul’s Outside the Walls, further highlighting their commitment to fostering Christian unity.
During the visit, the King and Queen will first meet Pope Leo XIV at the Apostolic Palace, followed by a private audience where King Charles will meet Cardinal Pietro Parolin, the Holy See’s Secretary of State. Queen Camilla will take the opportunity to view the Pauline Chapel, home to Michelangelo’s renowned frescoes of St. Peter and St. Paul. The visit will be underscored by a shared commitment to environmental issues, as the King and Pope Leo XIV will attend a service focused on the theme of ‘Care for Creation,’ a reflection of their mutual dedication to the protection of nature and the environment.

Adding to the occasion’s solemnity, the Children of the Choir of the King’s Chapel Royal and the Choir of St. George’s Chapel, Windsor, will perform during the ecumenical service, accompanied by the Sistine Chapel Choir, creating a harmonious and spiritually enriching experience.

This historic meeting is poised to strengthen the bond between the British monarchy and the Catholic Church, showcasing the ongoing dialogue between religious institutions and their shared responsibilities for the future of faith and the environment.
