Sarah Ferguson, the Duchess of York, is facing the potential loss of her Honorary Freedom of York title due to her ongoing association with Jeffrey Epstein, a scandal that has already led to the stripping of the same honour from her ex-husband, Prince Andrew, three years ago. The York city council is set to consider the motion to revoke her title at its November meeting.

This controversy follows recent revelations that Sarah Ferguson had sent a grovelling email to Epstein after his release from jail in 2011, calling him her “supreme friend.” This came shortly after she had publicly apologized for accepting £15,000 from the disgraced financier, known for his conviction on child sex offences.
The situation has continued to tarnish Ferguson’s reputation, with her public apology and subsequent email to Epstein raising questions about her connections to him. York council leader Claire Douglas stated that a motion to remove the title would be considered, especially given the ongoing associations between Ferguson, Prince Andrew, and Epstein.

Prince Andrew, who was also closely linked to Epstein, was stripped of his Honorary Freedom of York title in 2022 due to the scandal. The council expressed regret over these associations and emphasized their disapproval, particularly given the gravity of Epstein’s crimes. In addition to the potential loss of this prestigious title, Sarah Ferguson has seen her patronage at several charities revoked, and both she and Prince Andrew have been excluded from the Royal Family’s Christmas celebrations, further deepening their isolation.

Despite the controversy surrounding their associations with Epstein, both Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson continue to deny any wrongdoing. However, as the fallout from the scandal continues, their public standing, especially within royal circles, remains significantly compromised.
