The upcoming season of Máxima, based on the life story of Queen Maxima of the Netherlands, delves deeper into the royal’s emotional journey, including the moments before her wedding to King Willem-Alexander. A newly released trailer for season two teases a dramatic scene that suggests Maxima had second thoughts on her big day. The clip shows the couple (played by Delfina Chaves and Martijn Lakemeier) walking down the aisle, with Maxima’s voiceover revealing her inner turmoil: “I thought I was going to be super excited. But now the only thing I can think about is – am I ready? What the hell am I getting myself into?”

The scene cuts back to the wedding as the priest asks the bride, “What is your answer?” Maxima’s response, “Yes,” is followed by a smile, but the moment reflects her internal struggle. Delfina Chaves wears a replica of the stunning satin ivory Valentino gown that Maxima wore on her wedding day, complete with the iconic embroidered veil. Martijn, playing Willem-Alexander, dons the Royal Netherlands Navy uniform the king wore for the occasion.
Season one of Máxima, which aired in April 2024, focused on Maxima’s early life and her blossoming relationship with Willem-Alexander. Now, season two will take viewers through the wedding preparations and culminate with Willem-Alexander’s inauguration a decade later. The series will be available to stream on Videoland from March 14, 2026.

In real life, Maxima was visibly emotional on her wedding day. Photographs show her wiping away tears during the ceremony, believed to be partly due to the absence of her parents, Jorge Zorrequieta and Maria del Carmen Cerruti. Maxima’s father, Jorge, had served as Argentina’s agriculture minister during the brutal military dictatorship of the Dirty War (1974-1982), a period marked by the forced disappearance of around 30,000 people. Though he wasn’t directly accused of involvement in the regime’s atrocities, his alleged knowledge and inaction were significant factors in his exclusion from the wedding.
Maxima, while understanding the Dutch public’s concerns, expressed her sorrow over her father’s absence, stating, “As a daughter, I find it terrible that my father won’t be there, but that’s the way it is, and I understand the feelings of the Dutch on the question.” Despite this painful reality, she and Willem-Alexander tied the knot at Amsterdam’s Nieuwe Kerk on February 2, 2002.

The couple, now the King and Queen of the Netherlands since Willem-Alexander’s ascension in 2013 following Queen Beatrix’s abdication, share three daughters: Princess Catharina-Amalia, 21, Princess Alexia, 20, and Princess Ariane, 18. As Máxima continues to explore the royal couple’s relationship, the new season promises to uncover more of the emotional and personal moments that shaped Maxima’s journey to becoming queen.
