Prince Andrew’s decision to relinquish all of his royal titles has had significant implications, not only for him but also for those around him, especially his former wife, Sarah Ferguson. The King’s brother will no longer be known as the Duke of York, a title that has been synonymous with his identity for decades. As a result, Sarah, who has been known as Sarah, Duchess of York since their divorce in 1996, will now revert to her maiden name and be called Sarah Ferguson. This marks a notable shift in both her public persona and title.

The decision to step away from his royal titles follows a period of intense scrutiny surrounding Andrew’s relationship with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. In a statement from Buckingham Palace, Andrew expressed that his ongoing controversies had become a distraction to the work of the monarchy and his brother, King Charles III. “In discussion with The King, and my immediate and wider family, we have concluded the continued accusations about me distract from the work of His Majesty and the Royal Family,” Andrew stated. “I have decided, as I always have, to put my duty to my family and country first.”
Although he had already given up the use of his HRH title, Andrew remains a prince by virtue of his birthright as the son of Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip, though it remains unclear if he will choose to use the title moving forward. He has also relinquished his membership in the Order of the Garter, the United Kingdom’s oldest chivalric order, further distancing himself from royal honors.
The change also affects Sarah Ferguson, whose title of “Duchess of York” was tied to her marriage to Andrew. Following their divorce, Sarah lost the use of the HRH and has since been known simply as Sarah, Duchess of York. With Andrew’s decision to step away from his royal titles, Sarah will now be known as Sarah Ferguson, returning to the title she held before her marriage.

Importantly, the titles of their two daughters, Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie, remain unaffected by their father’s decision. Both princesses continue to hold their royal titles, and their status within the royal family remains intact.
The fallout from Prince Andrew’s decision is a reminder of the ongoing impact of his past actions on his family and the monarchy. While the royal family has sought to maintain a sense of unity, Andrew’s move to distance himself from public life reflects a significant shift in his relationship with the institution.
