Jimmy Fallon’s recent solo trip to Scotland turned into a serendipitous royal adventure that will surely be remembered for years to come. What began as a peaceful vacation to explore Scotland’s iconic landmarks, including a stay aboard the luxurious Royal Scotsman train, a whisky tasting with renowned connoisseur Charles MacLean, and a visit to Balmoral Castle, took an unexpected twist on Oct. 19.

Fallon, who had mentioned his trip to his friend Eddie Burns back in the U.S., shared how he felt compelled to toss an NYPD tie clip into the River Dee near Balmoral as a tribute to Eddie’s Scottish heritage. “I said, ‘There you go, Eddie, you will live forever in the River Dee,’” Fallon humorously recounted. However, the moment of casual mischief quickly turned into a royal encounter when Fallon turned around to find himself face-to-face with four armed Royal Guards. “I confessed to a little littering,” Fallon laughed as he explained the situation. But, as fate would have it, the guardsmen recognized him and invited him to join them for dinner.

Accepting the invitation, Fallon borrowed a kilt from the night manager at his hotel and suited up in black-tie attire for an evening with the Balaklava Company, 5th Battalion of the Royal Regiment. “I went to the officer’s mess at Victoria Barracks in Ballater,” Fallon shared on Instagram. “They were psyched I was wearing a kilt. We had the best dinner ever. There were great speeches, and they gave me this beautiful hat.” The evening was full of camaraderie, royal tradition, and laughter. Fallon was even presented with a tailor-made kilt, a special gift from Sergeant Cooper, the regiment’s tailor, as a lasting token of the unforgettable night. “He left dinner, made me a kilt!” Fallon marveled, clearly touched by the gesture.
In his Instagram post, Fallon encapsulated the essence of the spontaneous adventure: “Sometimes no plan is the best plan. Getting lost in the Highlands in Scotland ended up with me being a guest of the Royal Guard. Sent from the banks of the Clunie.” The Royal Regiment’s official social media account also chimed in, expressing gratitude for Fallon’s visit and humorously mentioning that they would “keep the bagpipes tuned for your next visit!” Fallon’s night concluded with a meaningful gesture, as he signed the visitors’ book, joining the ranks of notable figures, including royal family members, who had been honored with a place in the book over the years.

The encounter became a viral sensation, not only for the whimsical nature of the meeting but also for the warmth and generosity shown by the Royal Regiment. Major Thomas Blair, the Commanding Officer of 5 SCOTS, expressed his delight in hosting Fallon, calling it “a brilliant evening” and acknowledging that “it’s not every day you get to meet a Hollywood A-lister.” The chance meeting blossomed into a night of unforgettable experiences, and Fallon was clearly grateful for the hospitality extended to him in true Scottish style.
While this adventure in Scotland will certainly be one of Fallon’s fondest memories, it comes at a time of increasing pressure for late-night television hosts. With Stephen Colbert’s surprising cancellation and Jimmy Kimmel’s temporary suspension from ABC after making controversial comments, the political landscape of late-night TV has become more contentious. In a recent interview, Fallon was asked about the mounting pressure in the industry, especially as late-night hosts find themselves often in the political crosshairs. Fallon, however, remained focused on what he does best: humor. “Our show has never really been that political,” he explained. “We hit both sides equally, and we try to make everybody laugh, and that’s really the way our show works.” Fallon emphasized that, despite the turmoil in the industry, he continues to keep his head down and deliver jokes that are meant to entertain rather than provoke.
