While many coaches have issues with the Tush Push, Denver Broncos head coach Sean Payton isn’t one of them. In a recent interview with Andrew Mason of “Orange and Blue Today”, Payton stated he was in favor of keeping the play in the game, even stating it may be the safest play in football.
“The reason I stood up in favor of it is pretty simple,” Payton said. “If the powers to be don’t want it for aesthetic reasons or competitive reasons, you know, [that] it’s hard to officiate etcetera … but I’ve been involved in those meetings for a long time, and when all of a sudden health and safety was pulled into that — which might be the safest play in football — my bull**** nose kind of went up.”
Payton shows his supports for Tush Push
Payton also stated that he views it as a well-run quarterback sneak, which emphasizes the quarterback’s ability to manipulate the pile. Payton also stated that as long as the line of scrimmage is clean, he has no problem with the play. Payton also stated that he’d support the ban of the Tush Push for “aesthetic reasons or competitive reasons.” What bothered him was when some people tried to claim the play was a safety concern, which he viewed as a disingenuous statement.
While it appears that each of the Eagles’ opponents has to answer about their opinions on the Tush Push, it seems that Payton doesn’t really care to be honest. At the end of the day, there is one aspect of the game, and with the Eagles’ anemic offense, the ability to move the ball two to three yards seems to be a microcosm of the Eagles’ success.
