The sister of 17-year-old boxing up-and-comer Arturo Gatti Jr. claims he was “mysteriously killed” — and that authorities are now investigating his death as a homicide.
Sofia Gatti — the daughter of Canadian boxing legend Arturo Gatti Sr. — claims her family has “received documentation” indicating her brother’s death is being treated as a homicide by investigators after he was found hanged in a Mexico City apartment earlier this month, according to an update she shared on GoFundMe.
The grieving sister had raised more than $25,000 in donations to “hire an investigative team to get autopsy, toxicology, reports…. To find out what really happened…”
“I want to thank everyone who has supported the ongoing effort to uncover the truth about my brother, Arturo Gatti Jr.’s death,” Sofia wrote.
“To date, several legal and investigative steps have been taken in Mexico, Canada and the United States. Family representatives and legal counsel have filed for the preservation of Arturo’s remains, secured investigative access, and initiated forensic reviews.”
Sofia said the family has spent the donated money on “attorney retainers, document requests, travel to Mexico for official filings, and the initial funding of an independent investigative team in the US with international criminal case experience.”
She said the next phase will require roughly $16,000 to fund key legal and forensic efforts, including expanded toxicology testing, fingerprint analysis, and expert reviews, to keep the case advancing in court.
“Every contribution helps maintain transparency and accountability while allowing the family to pursue truth, integrity, and justice for Arturo,” Sofia wrote.
“Our long-term goal is to unify all legal efforts across the countries involved, ensuring a clear and coordinated path toward justice.”
Driven to follow his Hall of Fame father into the ring, Gatti Jr. moved to Mexico City to train at local boxing academies while gearing up for his professional debut. He was later found dead in the apartment he shared with his mother, Amanda Rodrigues.

TMZ reported shortly after his death that “it’s not clear if foul play is suspected.”
His father, Arturo Gatti Sr., a two-division world champion who held titles in both the IBF and WBC, was found hanged in July 2009 by his wife, Amanda Rodrigues Gatti, in a rented apartment in Brazil when he was 37 years old.
Rodrigues Gatti came under suspicion and was taken into custody before being released when authorities determined that Gatti Sr. died by suicide, according to ESPN.
Gatti was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 2013.
