The Late Show with Stephen Colbert is not airing a new episode tonight, September 15, 2025, and there’s a good reason why. CBS’ premiere late-night talk series is in the middle of an awkward year. Amid celebrating its 10th year on the air, the 2025-2026 cycle also happens to be its last.
In an unexpected move, CBS canceled The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, despite the program being the higest-rated among its peers. The network claimed that it was due to budgetary concerns, but persistent theories posited that it was politically-motivated, considering Colbert’s public criticism of President Donald Trump.
Unfortunately, despite the public outcry and support — something that was very clear during Colbert’s appearance at the 77th Primetime Emmy Awards, where The Late Show won Outstanding Talk Series. While the cancelation holds, the series still has several months left in its run, but it won’t broadcast a new episode tonight.

Per tradition, Colbert and the whole The Late Show took its annual summer hiatus from August 7 to September 2. Since returning from that break, he has had a mix of new episodes and re-runs. That said, the high-rated program won’t be airing a fresh outing tonight, September 15, because the staff and crew flew to Los Angeles to attend the 77th Primetime Emmys.
During Colbert’s emotional Emmy acceptance speech for winning the Outstanding Talk Series of the year, he made sure to paid tribute to his whole staff of around 200 people. While not all of them were on stage with him, it seemed like the majority of them were in attendance at the Los Angeles-set event.
When The Late Show With Stephen Colbert Will Be Back With New Episodes

The good thing is that The Late Show with Stephen Colbert is set to return on September 16 with a new episode. Colbert himself confirmed this at the Emmys (via ET). Meanwhile, Paramount Press has also revealed that the upcoming outing will feature Brandi Carlile as the main guest, as well as a cooking demo with Samin Nosrat.
For the rest of the week, Ron Howard will drop by on September 17, while Gary Oldman’s “The Colbert Questionert” will also release. That will be followed by Jake Tapper’s guesting on September 18, with an interview and a special performance by St. Vincent. No details yet for the following week of The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.
