The 2025 season didn’t end the way the St. Louis Cardinals hoped, but amid the frustration came a reason to believe in the future — and his name is Masyn Winn.
At just 23 years old, Winn capped his third big-league season by winning his first career Gold Glove Award, becoming the youngest player in Cardinals history to do so. It’s a remarkable milestone for a player who appeared in only 37 games back in 2023 before becoming a full-time shortstop last year.
This season, Winn didn’t just hold his own — he shined. He proved to be one of the most dynamic defenders in all of baseball, pairing elite range and arm strength with growing confidence at the plate. According to MLB.com’s John Denton, Winn’s award makes him the fifth-youngest shortstop ever to win a Gold Glove, trailing only Anthony Volpe, Alan Trammell, Francisco Lindor, and Ezequiel Tovar.
Even more impressive? Winn became the 100th Gold Glove winner in Cardinals history, extending the franchise’s MLB record since the award’s creation in 1957. He joins a legendary group of St. Louis shortstops — Ozzie Smith, Édgar Rentería, and Dal Maxvill — who once defined defensive excellence for the club.
For a team searching for answers this offseason, Winn’s emergence provides one of the clearest ones yet: the Cardinals’ future starts with their electric young shortstop.
