The royal family spent much of last year navigating a private health crisis, one that placed both emotional and practical strain on their daily lives.
While Kate Middleton’s remission brought relief in January, questions lingered about how their three young children handled the turbulent months that came before.

Now, Prince William has spoken publicly about how he and the Princess of Wales approached those conversations at home.
A family shaken
In March 2024, shortly after King Charles revealed his own cancer diagnosis, Kate announced that she, too, was undergoing treatment.
Speaking in a recorded message filmed in Windsor Gardens, she thanked the public for their support and described the shock her family experienced.

“It has been an incredibly tough couple of months for our entire family,” she said at the time, adding that the focus had been on processing the diagnosis privately and creating stability for their children.
Recovering from surgery and beginning treatment required time, Kate explained. But the most delicate task was helping Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis understand what was happening.
Choosing honesty
Kate said they worked to frame everything “in a way that is appropriate for them,” offering reassurance that she was “getting stronger every day.”
During the months she stepped back from public life, William increased his responsibilities both publicly and at home.

When the Princess of Wales shared in January that she was in remission, the family continued to stay largely out of the spotlight. Until recently, little was known about the children’s emotional journey.
Appearing on Brazilian television during his Earthshot Prize trip, William explained that the couple faced “difficult questions” from their children and decided the only approach was transparency.
‘We told them everything’
“Every family goes through difficult times and faces challenges together,” he said, according to The Sun. “How you deal with those moments makes all the difference.”
William added that George, Charlotte and Louis asked many questions about their mother’s condition. Rather than shield them, he and Kate chose to be open.
“We decided to tell our children everything, both the good news and the bad. We explain to them why certain things happen and why they might feel upset,” he said. “Many questions might come up without answers — I think all parents go through that.”
