The Duchess of Edinburgh took part in a heartwarming celebration for World Sight Day 2025, an occasion dedicated to raising awareness about the importance of eye health and eliminating avoidable blindness. Her Royal Highness joined a distinguished group of eye care professionals, researchers, and patients at a special reception held in London. The event highlighted the Duchess’s long-standing commitment to eye health, both in the United Kingdom and internationally, as she continues to champion causes that improve the lives of those affected by vision impairment.

During the event, The Duchess was honored with an Honorary Fellowship from The College of Optometrists. The prestigious award was presented to her by Dr. Gillian Ruddock MCOptom in recognition of her tireless work advocating for eye health initiatives. This recognition is a testament to the Duchess’s significant contributions to promoting vision care and supporting eye health projects around the globe. The ceremony took place at the historic Apothecaries’ Hall in the City of London, a building that holds special significance as the home of The Worshipful Company of Spectacle Makers, one of the College’s predecessor bodies.

In her remarks, The Duchess emphasized the vital importance of accessible eye care and the need for continued global collaboration to prevent vision loss, particularly in underserved regions. She spoke with passion about her ongoing efforts to ensure that eye health becomes a priority on the global health agenda and acknowledged the tireless work of professionals and organizations committed to eradicating avoidable blindness.
Later in the event, The Duchess of Edinburgh, in her role as Global Ambassador for the International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness (IAPB), presented the “Love Your Eyes Special Recognition Award” to England Lioness and Chelsea Football Club goalkeeper, Hannah Hampton. The award recognized Hannah’s remarkable efforts to raise awareness about eye health, particularly her inspiring personal journey.
Born with strabismus, a condition that severely affected her depth perception, Hannah underwent multiple surgeries before the age of three to improve her vision. Despite early advice from some specialists to avoid sports, Hannah’s determination and passion for football led her to defy the odds and pursue her dream of becoming a professional player. The Duchess praised Hannah’s resilience and her role in inspiring others to take control of their eye health, especially those facing similar challenges.

The Duchess of Edinburgh’s involvement in World Sight Day 2025 further underscores her dedication to health advocacy and her commitment to improving the lives of those affected by avoidable blindness. Her work continues to shine a light on the importance of eye care, and her efforts to raise awareness are helping to bring much-needed attention to this often-overlooked issue, ultimately working towards a world where sight is protected for all.
