For decades, fans have admired Hoda Kotb not only for the bright energy she brings to their mornings, but also for her openness about life’s most vulnerable moments — love, heartbreak, motherhood, and the long roads in between. Now, as she continues building her blended family with fiancé Joel Schiffman, Hoda reveals why — despite years of happiness without a wedding — saying “I do” is still an important final step for them.
During a recent episode of TODAY with Hoda & Jenna, the hosts celebrated Hollywood favorites Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell, a couple who famously never married throughout their decades-long romance. Hoda praised their love story, but confessed her personal choice looks a little different.
“We really feel like getting married is that one last thing that will make our family complete,” she said warmly.
Hoda — now 56 — and Joel, 62, have been together for more than seven years. In that time, they’ve adopted two daughters: Haley Joy, 4, and Hope Catherine, 1. Their path to parenthood was anything but traditional, and because of that, Hoda says the symbolism of marriage holds a special place in her heart.
“With our family, there are a lot of things that are unusual about our grouping,” she explained with a laugh. “There’s a lot to talk about — ‘They’re adopted, we’re older, they’re our kids, we’re not married…’ So I think having that piece in place just makes everything simpler for them.”https://www.instagram.com/p/CBtOu8IFZqj/embed/captioned/?cr=1&v=14&wp=540&rd=https%3A%2F%2Fviewfindernews.com&rp=%2Fbtvkhanhhuyen%2Fhuyen7-hoda-kotb-has-never-followed-the-traditional-path-and-she-never-needed-to-she-found-her-soulmate-later-she-became-a-mother-later-she-built-a-life-that-feels-magical-because-its-h#%7B%22ci%22%3A0%2C%22os%22%3A1040.199999999255%2C%22ls%22%3A689.8999999994412%2C%22le%22%3A1002.2999999998137%7D
For Hoda, it isn’t about following tradition. It’s about giving her daughters clarity — a comforting story to grow up with. A united front. A sense of belonging to one name, one team.
She emphasized that everyone must choose the life that fits their heart best. “Goldie and Kurt have their love figured out perfectly,” she said. “But for us… marriage feels like a beautiful next chapter.”
Like so many couples, Hoda and Joel faced unexpected setbacks when the COVID-19 pandemic hit. They had planned a romantic beach wedding in August, then rescheduled it for November — exactly one year after Joel’s proposal during a tropical getaway. Both dates had to be postponed.
Instead of frustration, Hoda focused on gratitude.
“I’m going to be so happy to get married,” she said. “But I’m also perfectly fine right now as we nest and do our things.”
Home has become their sanctuary — a place where fairy-tale moments unfold between toddler art projects, bedtime stories, and stolen laughter between parents who waited so long to build the family they have.
In fact, the joy has been so fulfilling that in October, Hoda shared an exciting update: she and Joel have completed paperwork to adopt a third child.https://www.instagram.com/p/B5VcbaPFDXS/embed/captioned/?cr=1&v=14&wp=540&rd=https%3A%2F%2Fviewfindernews.com&rp=%2Fbtvkhanhhuyen%2Fhuyen7-hoda-kotb-has-never-followed-the-traditional-path-and-she-never-needed-to-she-found-her-soulmate-later-she-became-a-mother-later-she-built-a-life-that-feels-magical-because-its-h#%7B%22ci%22%3A1%2C%22os%22%3A1041.2999999998137%2C%22ls%22%3A689.8999999994412%2C%22le%22%3A1002.2999999998137%7D
Their dream isn’t just a wedding — it’s a house full of love, exactly the way they imagined it.
Like any couple picturing their big day, Hoda and Joel already know what their first dance will be.
“There’s a great wedding song,” she told viewers, her face lighting up. “I love Van Morrison’s ‘Someone Like You.’ That’s such a beautiful, beautiful song. I think that’ll be our wedding song.”
The choice feels fitting — a song about finding a soulmate later in life, recognizing love when it finally arrives.
Hoda has often admitted she never pictured herself becoming a mom in her 50s, or finding love again after heartbreak. Life surprised her — in the best way. She’s also admitted she sometimes worries that the magic of her life milestones doesn’t measure up to those of others.
But the people she loves have reminded her otherwise.
Recently, after sharing her engagement news publicly, she received a text from someone whose approval means everything.
“My dad wrote me three words: ‘Very proud dad,’” she recalled with tears in her eyes. “And I thought, what is there to be proud about? I’m just drinking wine in the morning!”
Her co-host Jenna Bush Hager, a close friend who understands the struggle of balancing purpose and happiness, reminded her that joy is a contribution too.
“Don’t be down on yourself,” Jenna told her. “You bring joy to people.”

That joy — millions see it every morning. Her daughters feel it when she tucks them into bed. Joel sees it in the home they’ve built together.
Hoda says marrying Joel won’t change the love that already exists in their home — it will simply frame it in a way that strengthens their future together.
“Our girls already know we’re their parents,” she said. “But this is about making everything clear, simple, and beautifully official for them.”
Though the date is still floating in uncertainty, the destination is set: a celebration filled with beachside happiness, dancing, and two little girls stealing the show in tiny dresses.
For Hoda, marriage isn’t the beginning of her love story — it’s a joyful chapter that was always worth waiting for.
And when the day finally comes, the world will be cheering right along with them.
