David Letterman‘s next guest is no stranger to Netflix.
The former late-night host, who is currently producing a new season of his Netflix interview series My Next Guest Needs No Introduction, moderated a taped interview with Adam Sandler this week at New York University.
NYU students packed the college’s Kimmel Center on Monday, with many hopefuls on the standby line left unable to gain entry. Students had been told that Letterman would interview a “surprise star guest” who was an NYU alum. Inside the taping, Letterman’s guest was revealed to be Sandler, who graduated from the acting program at NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts in 1988.
While context for the event was not given beyond the fact that it was being “filmed for television,” Letterman is in production on future installments of My Next Guest. Last month, the Netflix series was picked up for two more seasons, though the streamer offered no hint of how many episodes those seasons will include.
Letterman has filmed episodes for My Next Guest in a university setting before. His most recent installment, released in April, was an interview with WNBA star Caitlin Clark that was held as part of his long-running lecture series at his alma mater, Ball State University.
According to attendees, Letterman’s conversation with Sandler touched on the actor’s time at NYU and living on campus. Letterman has been known to explore his interviewees’ origins on My Next Guest, often intercutting the conversation with field pieces of the host visiting places from his guest’s past.
Letterman’s chosen subjects for My Next Guest occasionally align with who’s on the Netflix roster. Previous guests who have appeared in episodes or bonus content amid their own Netflix projects include John Mulaney, Zach Galifianakis, and Jerry Seinfeld.
Sandler is in the eleventh year of a major multi-film deal with Netflix, most recently renewed in 2020. He’s fresh off releasing the record-breaking Happy Gilmore 2 for the streamer and will next star in the Netflix film Jay Kelly, due out December 5.
Also on Sandler’s docket for Netflix is Roommates, a film written by SNL writers Jimmy Fowlie and Ceara O’Sullivan that is also set to feature Sarah Sherman.
Season 6 of My Next Guest Needs No Introduction is expected to premiere later this year on Netflix.
