On Monday morning’s episode of The View, moderator Whoopi Goldberg was noticeably absent from the panel. In fact, she’ll be mercifully missing from the ABC talk show all week. Now, the truth behind Goldberg’s absence has been revealed.
Goldberg, who turned 70 last week, took to her Instagram Story to reveal why she won’t be on The View this week.
“If you notice I’m not on The View this week, it’s because I’m in Italy working,” Goldberg explained.
Goldberg wrote this alongside an image of her getting her makeup done in a dressing room.
Joy Behar, 83, then kicked off Monday’s show by acknowledging Goldberg’s absence.
“If you’re wondering why I’m here on a Monday, and Whoopi is not, it’s because she’s in Italy filming a soap opera,” Behar said. Monday is typically Behar’s day off on The View.
Behar proceeded to play some behind the scenes clips of Goldberg in Naples filming her new project.

Goldberg Scores Role In Italian Soap Opera
This comes after Goldberg revealed back in June that she had shockingly landed a role on the popular Italian soap opera, Un Posto Al Sole. It appears that this is what she’s finally working on all these months later.
At the time that she made this announcement, Goldberg said that she was “happy” to be joining the cast of the soap opera.
“They know it’s a crazy idea, I know it’s a crazy idea, but what a wonderful thing to do,” Goldberg gushed. “I’m looking forward to it. I’m excited. No, my Italian is not perfect, but we’ve worked it out. Ciao! See you on TV.”
Fremantle Italia then announced that Goldberg’s character will make her debut in 2026 as part of a multi-episode storyline.
Why Is Goldberg Doing This?
Working on a soap opera in Italy seems like a very random career move for the Oscar-winning actress. Goldberg attempted to explain her reasoning behind signing on during an appearance on the The View‘s Behind the Table podcast last Thursday. According to Goldberg, she got the offer because she was actively “looking for things to do,” and this is what popped up.

“I only know soap operas here,” she admitted. Goldberg went on to say that she loves “a soap opera. I love it, I don’t know how they work there. I don’t know if they do four lines from here, three lines from there, I don’t know how it works. But it will all be new.”
“I wish I could take y’all with me,” she added of her co-workers on The View. “I might be able to shoot something on my cell… It’s time. It’s time for me to do some things in addition to this.”
Goldberg’s Outburst On The View
ABC executives are likely breathing a sigh of relief that Goldberg is missing this week, given the controversy that she’s been stirring up on The View as of late.

Earlier this month, Goldberg was furious when her co-host Sunny Hostin handed her a note correcting a jab she’d made at President Donald Trump.
“What the hell? What?” Goldberg said as she looked at the note. “We don’t know if Trump used an autopen to pardon, it was a joke!”
Goldberg proceeded to rip up the note, which clearly came from her own producers. This prompted many to think that ABC might finally fire Goldberg.
“About time they started calling this hack out. Do better – FIRE THEM ALL,” one social media user commented. Another added, “Why are they still spewing lies, hate and misinformation. Get rid of these dinosaurs.”

Goldberg Learns Her Fate With ABC
Some thought that this might finally be the nail in the coffin with Goldberg, and that ABC would fire her for this. Unfortunately for those hoping for Goldberg’s demise, however, ABC insiders made it clear that this would not be happening.
“Whoopi will stay on the show for as long as they will have her,” the insider told Daily Mail. “She’s not as controversial as the other hosts and certainly isn’t even considered to be on the chopping block.”

“She gets paid very well, and typically always follows orders from producers,” the source continued. According to this insider, The View has become “part of Whoopi’s life.” That’s why she won’t be leaving unless she either gets a “bigger offer” somewhere else or her “health deteriorates.”
“She also loves having the flexibility where she’s off every Friday, so she uses that time to travel or work on other projects,” the source concluded.
It seems that this Italian soap opera is one of these “other projects.” Who would have thought?!
Even so, ABC executives are likely relieved to be getting a week-long break from constantly worrying about what will be coming out of Goldberg’s mouth next. Here’s hoping Goldberg prolongs her trip to Italy, because we won’t be missing her liberal rants on The View!
