Meet Stephen Colbert’s partner Evie McGee Colbert: an actress and producer, she was instrumental in keeping The Late Show running during the Covid-19 pandemic – but she’s not an avid watcher
The couple that argue over spoons and pans in the kitchen together, stay together. Or at least that’s the case with famous talk show host Stephen Colbert, 60 and his wife of 31 years, Evelyn “Evie” McGee Colbert. Late last year the couple came out with a cookbook, Does This Taste Funny? Recipes Our Family Loves, which Bon Appétit described as a “master class in couples therapy”.

In an interview with Bon Appétit, McGee Colbert, 61, opened up about being a “recovering insecure cook”, her husband’s culinary ambitiousness, how they began cooking together during the pandemic and “the spoon story” … the time she almost scraped a metal, non-stick pan with a metal spatula, much to her husband’s ire.
So who is Stephen Colbert’s wife and mother of his children, Madeleine, Peter and John?
What does she do for work?

McGee Colbert graduated from the University of Virginia and the Circle in the Square Theatre School, New York. She worked briefly as an actress and later as development director at the Drama League of New York and the Remains Theatre of Chicago. She is a founding member of New Jersey’s Montclair Film Festival and the president of its board of trustees. Per her IMDb page, she was in The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug (2013) and played Colbert’s mother in TV series Strangers with Candy (1999). McGee Colbert is a board member of Charleston’s International African American Museum, South Carolina, and the vice-president of Spartina Productions, founded by Stephen, where she is also an independent producer.
How did she meet Stephen Colbert?

The Colberts lived in Charleston and their families were friends, according to People. They even went to the same fraternity party once. But it was when Stephen saw Evie in a theatre lobby at the local Spoleto Festival that he knew she was the one. What caught her eye, meanwhile, was how he looked like he loved his mother, walking arm in arm with her. They started talking at the after-party for the Philip Glass and Allen Ginsberg musical-theatre piece Hydrogen Jukebox and sparks flew. The couple married in 1993.
She doesn’t follow The Late Show religiously

Last September the couple appeared on the Emmys red carpet, where Evie admitted to not watching The Late Show with Stephen Colbert every night, but catching up on Fridays instead. In her defence, she simply said, “Oops”. However, McGee Colbert was one of the driving forces keeping the show running during the pandemic.
