They devote their lives to protecting those that they’ve never met, selflessly stepping forward to defend all that we hold dear in this country.
These individuals don’t join the service for recognition or fame, it’s just simply what they feel called to do, forgoing personal ambition to become a part of something much larger than themselves.
They’re the brave few who make up our Armed Forces, and some of our nation’s very best are right here in Chiefs Kingdom.
The Chiefs have a rich history of supporting our men and women in uniform throughout the years, including through the “Tribute to the Troops” program at GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium, which recognizes the real heroes in our community during every home game.
That initiative will take place once again this week as Sergeant First Class Gil Rodriguez will be recognized as the “Tribute to the Troops” honoree presented by Crown Royal during the Chiefs’ matchup against the Baltimore Ravens.

A member of the U.S. Army since 2014, Sgt. 1st Class Rodriguez’s reasons for joining the military were rooted in a desire to serve from a young age.
“I joined to pursue a better opportunity to create a family, and to serve my country,” Sgt. 1st Class Rodriguez said. “The assignments have become more challenging over the years due to the responsibility associated with the duty positions, but they have been rewarding.”
Sgt. 1st Class Rodriguez has certainly left an impression, too. After just one year of being a drill sergeant, he was named the 2025 Maneuver Support Center of Excellence Drill Sergeant of the Year at Fort Leonard Wood in July. The competition, which began with more than 700 drill sergeants, saw Sgt. 1st Class Rodriguez stand out among the rest in areas such as first aid, marksmanship, physical readiness training, land navigation, and methods of instruction.
“I get to have a hand in training Soldiers and make a difference in their lives,” Sgt. 1st Class Rodriguez told the Fort Leonard Wood Public Affairs Office. “I work hard to make sure they are disciplined and are the very best Soldiers I can send to the Army.”
Sgt. 1st Class Rodriguez went on to represent Fort Leonard Wood at the national competition at Fort Jackson in South Carolina earlier this month, and now back in the Kansas City area, fans at the game on Sunday will have an opportunity to show Sgt. 1st Class Rodriguez their appreciation for his excellent service to our country.
