Team USA’s narrow semifinal win over the Dominican Republic had no shortage of stars — but one of the most important moments belonged to an unlikely hero.
Blue Jays reliever Tyler Rogers, a late addition to the roster, delivered a clutch performance that helped swing the game and send Team USA to the World Baseball Classic final.
A High-Leverage Moment Against a Superstar

Rogers was called into action in the fifth inning with trouble already brewing.
With two runners on and one out, the Dominican Republic had a prime opportunity to take control. Standing in the way was none other than Juan Soto — one of the most dangerous hitters in the world.
Rogers didn’t overpower him. He didn’t need to.
After missing outside with his first pitch, Rogers came back with a sinker on the corner that induced weak contact. Soto rolled it over, resulting in a perfectly timed inning-ending double play.
Threat over.
The Turning Point of the Game

In a tightly contested 2-1 matchup, that sequence proved to be one of the defining moments.
The Dominican Republic struggled to capitalize all night, finishing just 2-for-9 with runners in scoring position and leaving eight men on base. Rogers’ escape in the fifth was one of several missed opportunities that ultimately cost them.
Even so, the game remained within reach until the final out — making every key pitch along the way that much more important.
From Late Addition to Key Contributor

Rogers wasn’t even part of Team USA’s original roster.
He joined the squad late in the tournament and didn’t pitch immediately after arriving. But when his number was finally called, he stepped into a pressure-packed situation and delivered exactly what was needed.
For Blue Jays fans, it was an early glimpse of what he brings to the table.
Built for These Moments

Rogers has made a career out of thriving in situations like this.
His ability to generate ground balls at an elite rate makes him especially valuable when a team needs a quick escape. Last season, his 61.6% ground ball rate ranked among the best in baseball, while his ability to limit hard contact added another layer of effectiveness.
That skill set was on full display against Soto.
Familiar Rivalry Adds Another Layer

The matchup also carried some familiarity.
Rogers and Soto have faced each other multiple times over the years, dating back to their days in the National League. Historically, Rogers has held his own — and this latest encounter only added to that track record.
Now, with Soto still in New York, the two could meet again during interleague play when the Mets visit Toronto later this season.
A Preview of What’s Ahead in Toronto
After signing a three-year deal with the Blue Jays this offseason, Rogers is expected to play a key role in high-leverage situations.
If this performance is any indication, he’ll be trusted to handle some of the toughest assignments — especially when a ground ball is needed most.
And now, he’ll head into the MLB season with something extra: momentum from a clutch international performance and a shot at a WBC title.
For a player who wasn’t even on the roster at the start of the tournament, that’s quite the impact.
