Al Roker, one of the most beloved faces in morning television, is reflecting on his remarkable three-decade journey with the Today show — and hinting that big changes may be on the horizon.
In a candid new interview with TV Insider, the 71-year-old meteorologist — who first stepped into the role once held by Willard Scott — opened up about the future of the iconic NBC morning program and his place in it. “We all come and go on the show,” he said. “We are temporary custodians of the show. To be part of it, it’s really a privilege and an honor.”
Roker’s words struck both nostalgia and curiosity among longtime fans. Over his 30 years, he’s weathered every kind of broadcast storm — from covering hurricanes to sharing heartfelt family milestones. Yet, his humility remains unchanged. “I filled in when Bryant [Gumbel] and Jane [Pauley] were hosting,” he recalled. “I take pride in having some DNA from the past while still being part of the present.”
When asked about what lies ahead for Today, Roker didn’t hold back his trademark humor: “If I knew that, I wouldn’t need this job!” Still, he made one thing clear — the show’s staying power lies in its community. “The Today show is a shared experience,” he explained. “I still meet young people who tell me they watched the show with their parents or grandparents. There’s a bond there.”

That sense of family — both within the studio and among its viewers — has defined the program for over 70 years. From heartfelt interviews to lighthearted moments on the plaza, Today has always been more than just a show; it’s a morning ritual for millions. “People think you only want to see people like you on TV,” Roker said. “But really, people tune in for stories and for connection.”
Even as streaming services and social media dominate, Roker believes Today’s magic lies in its simplicity. “People talk about TikTok and interactivity, but you still see people holding up signs that say ‘Hi Mom’ on our show,” he said. “That’s the beauty of it — it’s communal, it’s simple, and it works.”
Behind his cheerful demeanor, Roker has faced serious health battles and personal challenges, yet his optimism never wavers. His reflection on the show’s future — and his own — feels both grounded and bittersweet. “We’ve been through so many changes,” he said, “and that’s what keeps it alive. None of us are forever, but the Today family always finds a way to carry on.”
As the beloved host hints at an eventual handoff, fans can’t help but wonder who might carry that legacy next — and whether the chemistry, warmth, and genuine connection that define Roker’s presence can ever truly be replaced. For now, though, Al is still smiling through every sunrise — a man who knows when to let go, but isn’t quite ready to say goodbye.
